Are Knives Just Tools?

Do you buy your knives as tools, or do you collect them and baby them. This may depend on the price/personal value of the knife. But what do you think, is a knife just a tool or is it something more.

A knife is a tool. The only reason I buy them is so I can use them. There is no point in buying something with no intent on using it. At least in my opinion.

I would't buy so many if I just looked at them as tools, but I still cheerfully use any and all of mine.

Predominantly, yes, knives are just tools, but many have a certain toy factor to them.

To me, they are tools, but I surely enjoy them more than a hammer.

I mean... aren't we all on this forum because we see knives as more than a simple tool? ;)

Hello,

I have never bought a knife with the intention of just looking at it. I can see why people do it, the investment and esthetic value of it. But I buy and us them as tools, some for certain jobs like my Spyderco H1. I always try to use the right knife for the specific job so I have a decent collection of "tools".

Have a good one,

Chris

I buy all of my knives as tools, beautiful, sexy tools. I don't belong to any hammer forums. :)

I see knives as tools and use them as such. With that being said I find them aesthetically pleasing as well and enjoy owning them. I'm not a "collector" type, but own a great number of knives I don't need.

For myself;
Production knives are tools. Some with more of a coolness factor than others. They all get used.
Handmade knives can go both ways.
Handmade kitchen knives all get used as much as possible.
Neckers, hunters and utilities all get used.
Daggers and fighters haven't been used yet but if I get in a knife fight.......
Like that's going to happen.

I think the reason why we have so many is that it's more then a tool. Otherwise, we wouldn't need a collection of over five knives to suffice. But, how many people here only have five knives?

I use them as a tool but also flick them open about 200 times a day so it is a lot of things for me:)

anything i buy is a tool but i have a couple knives that i dont use because they were gifts long ago or belonged to family members.

Knives are tools, and there is also a bit of a weapon aspect to many of them, and they can also be accoutrements and status symbols just like an expensive watch or jewelery

A knife in the pocket is very different from having a multi-tool on the belt. This is so for reasons which are unique to each individual.

I buy mine as tools and with intent to use them as such.
However, do I truly need more than a SAK? Probably not.
Would I need more than one or two decent pocket knives?
Nope. Do I have more than that? Yes.
So while I do carry and use them, part of it will always be novelty for anyone that owns more than one or two decent work knives. Us people that have $1,000+ wrapped up in this... fixation appreciate our knives and our nice tools, but we truly don't NEED more than a couple hundred worth lol.
