All of the custom makers are selling them faster than they can make them. Kit Carson has a two year waiting list. Even production knives can be hard to come by. I had to wait for an LCC and am still waiting for a BM 940. Is there a knife shortage.

BE QUIET!
What are you trying to do, start a run on the market????

I don't know if knives are more popular than ever, but I know the industry is experiancing a popularity it's not seen in a very long time.
I don't know how old you are Neno, but I remember a time when your choices were pretty much limited to whatever short product lines were available from makers such as Case, Western, Ka-Bar, Shrade, and Buck.
Then, in the early 80's, along came a guy named Les Roberston and his Pacific Cutlery Company, (sounds like a crappy 60's band don't it?) and things started to happen pretty fast.
The incredible diversity (yick, there's that word!) of blades today is stunning when I think back to how it USED to be, and perhaps with as many knives are there are today, interest and demand will always remain high.

I sure hope so at least!

I remember when a boy scout knife and a Buck sheath knife were the highest form of cutlery a kid could aspire to.

Yeah, it's a great time to be a "cutlery enthusiast".

I sure am enjoying it. Especially the large and ever growing numbers of custom makers out there. Chances are pretty good that you can get a nice knife built to your liking for a reasonable price.

Factory stuff, I don't buy a whole lot of anymore, there's a few on my list- but I don't think they're going to be all that hard to come by. At least i hope...

Knives more popular now than ever before!? No way. Not by a long shot - probably even the opposite. Generationally speaking, it wasn't too long ago that most every adult male carried some form of knife, be it a fixed blade out of doors, a stockman at the shop, or a pearl-handled pen knife at the office. Many women too. Their knives were carried and used openly all the time. Now? Take your average crowd at a shopping center, football game, or whatever, and I'd be willing to bet that the percentage carrying our oldest tool is lower than 5. Sad.

I remember those days too. My first carry knife was a Gerber Paul knife that my girlfriend bought me for the outrageous price of $89.00. That was in the very early 80's. Then in the mid 90's I picked up a catalouge from AG Russell at the hospital and started buying knives from him because as a southpaw his "one hand knife" worked for both hands. Then I met Mr. Sebenza and my life hasn't been the same. And then Darrel Ralph and Tom Mayo. Don't think I will ever carry a regular production knife again. Since I was 5 years old I was ga ga about knives, I think it's in the genes. When Richard Ramirez (midnight slasher) was on the loose in the So. California area, I decided never to be without a knife (even in bed). The appealing thing to me about knives is that you can use them for self defense, they are legal to carry and they are utilitarian, I find I am always needing a
knfe to open a package or cut an apple or orange. Now knives are so convienient and well made you never need to be without one. I think a lot of people like knives and now the makers are just filling the latent demand. Oh well, just my $.02

My guess would be that knives are more popular as a collectable. I also remember a time when most people carried a knife, men, women and kids, but I didn't know of anyone that was a collector of knives they were just plain, simple, inexpensive and practical tools. I only found out about other people that were into knives in '98. When I think of all the companies that have started in that time or the number of new styles that have come out. I don't think there has ever been a better time to be a KnifeKnut.

Scott Dog,

I live in LA and I was wondering if you have found any good knife shops worth checking out. I buy most of my knives over the internet usually but it is always nice to check things out in person.

With good folks like us pushing the value of a good knife and collecting the good stuff, I hope Sheeple begin to see the value of the knives and not the fact they can be used to kill. Like so many common household items, axe, hammer, kitchen knife blah blah blah!

Lets hope it is an upward trend!

I'd just like to add that the popularity of the multi-tool has done a great deal to promote the every day carry and use of edged tools.
