are kydex sheaths any good. Will they last for awhile and hold the knife well.

I would like to know everyone's feelings and thought on kydex sheaths. Will they still hold the knife well and not let it accidently fall out after months of use. Thanks

Just like most everything, its in the maker. You can get junk for cheap that will fail, or you can have it made by a reputable craftsman and spend a little more but its with you for life.

I've had good luck with the few kydex sheaths I've owned. LEATHERMAN is correct. I've seen clean, crisp and tight fitting kydex sheaths, and I've seen sloppy kydex also. It comes down to the maker.

If you need some kydex sheaths or have any questions I would be glad to help you. Check out my website I've done sheaths for all kinds of knives. Let me know what you think.

I think the TIE kydex sheaths are awesome. If Kevin is offering you some pointers, take advantage of it.

Always boils down to who made the sheath. The gamut of quality will run from excellent to atrocious, so best to figure out what you want in a sheath, then do a little research to find out who can deliver that. Tim Wegner (founder of Blade-Tech) once told me that "there are more good knife makers out there than there are good sheath makers" and that statement still holds true today, though it has gotten a little better.

I think Mike's last sentence is very very true.

I have owned a few Kydex sheaths. Both have been excellent. They are not my speed, nor do I require their style. However, for a bomb proof knife package, I think Kydex is a great solution.

I also think Mike knows his Kydex very well - so listen to him above me. ;)

I had one on a whitewater PFD that layed out in the summer sun for an hour or so and got soft/loose enough to drop the Hideaway Knife out and into the river. Real bummer! --KV

That would be my main concern after quality. The stuff forms at low enough temp that it would be a mistake to leave one in your car, especially in places like here where the summer sun hits 110f often enough. There have been times where an egg would cook on the open blacktop here. Surely that could be problems for thermo plastics.

The only kydex sheath that I own is for a neck knife.

I'm like the Weatherman. I like leather over plastic in nearly any case. Obviously with water submersion, and when there are serious corrosion concerns, kydex is a great solution.

I think kydex is visually appealing, but like the guy from Leodis leather points out, it doesn't have the tactile feel or visual appeal that is ingrained in most of us to compare to leather.

I know you didn't ask about leather, but that's my take. :)

Although I'm a leather man through and through , I think I will try bending some Kydex .
It is foolish to ignore technology .
I much prefer to not like something because of experience and knowledge than just stubborn , stuck in your ways ,traditional ignorance .
I am a lover of simplicity , and from what I've seen you can't get much more simple than Kydex .
But , and its a big But , I will always love making things from leather , it just feels right .

Although I prefer the look of a nice leather sheath over Kydex,
I did try my hand at making a few Kydex sheaths for my Izula that I just bought.
I am really happy at the way they turned out and so far work very well as it has been my EDC for about a month now.

Thank you very much. I looked at your site and it looks like you make great quality products. I will probably be in touch. Thank you for you knowledge
