how about a folder on a neck cord?
My son carries a small folder on a neck cord for handiness.
I'm wondering if it would be a neck knife ...legally.

AND I'm not even sure if neck knives ARE illegal.

Anyone know the answer/s?

The fact the the knife is carried on a neck cord is not as important as the kind of knife itself. Neck cord is a method of carry rather than a type.

Fixed blades, generally speaking, are not advised for concealed carry. This is because fixed blades run the possibility of being interpreted by police and courts as "Dirks" or "Daggers." (don't get me started...)

Non-switchblade folders on the other hand are fine for the most part. There is no specific length limit mandated by CA law for such folders. However, also be advised the individual counties and cities of CA can have there own restrictions that go beyond state law, especially given CA size and diversity.

California law prohibits concealed carrying of anything that can be readily used as a stabbing weapon. Most interpret that to mean any fixed blade knife. Theoretically it could also mean a screwdriver or ballpoint pen. The law is vague at best. Open carry should be fine but check with your local laws as there are length restrictions in some cities and counties (Los Angeles has a 3" limit I believe). Also any blade disguised as something else (belt buckle, writing pen, lipstick, cane sword, etc) is expressly forbidden.

Carrying a fixed blade knife in a neck or belt sheath while out hiking, camping, hunting or fishing is legal everywhere in California, and there is no length limit. Even in LA, there is an exception in the law for work, recreation, or religious purposes. So if you're a Sikh, go ahead and wear your kirpan in LA.
