Are neck knives practical?

Hello all! I've been thinking about getting a neck knife, but I wonder if they're any real use (besides being fun

). I was thinking about getting a La Griffe, but it's purely defensive and I'd like something that was practical too. Defense is NOT my main concern. The Crawford neck knives look good. Any suggestion or opinions on the practical use of neck knives? Thanks in advance.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

I think they are very practical as utility knives, but, as a defense item they are somewhat slow to access unless you carry them outside of your shirt.
They are practical for utility in cases where one doesn't have pockets on the pants one is wearing, or when IWB carry is sometimes not practical, like for some overweight people (like me). Or maybe if your waist is already chock-full-o-gear and there is just no more room for anything else, knife included. Or if your attire would be compromised by a knife in the pocket or waistband or hanging off the belt.
I'm sure there are more reasons why a NK is practical, but, that's all I can think of right now.
About the LaGriffe. I used mine at work to open boxes and cut twine, rope and tape and it worked quite well. That 154CM holds one helluva good edge. It's not just for defense anymore.

Tons of great NK's out there that will serve the owner in utility as well as defense, whatever is important to the owner.
I like the REKAT Fang as well. Works either way.
I also have a couple of customs and several other factory NKs. The NK is a good concept, IMO.

Johan, like a few others, I may be a little extra healthy. When sitting or standing, my neck knife is easier to get and use than my pocket knife. It's size is about 6 1/2" overall and it doesn't cause any excitement when you use it. Pockets, no pockets, full pockets, it doesn't make any difference.
I make neck knives and so do a lot of other people. I have worn one for about 7 years so you might say I am accustomed to wearing one. What ever you decide to get, it may take a little while to get used to it, but I am sure you will enjoy it.

I had one around my neck one time, under my shirt, RJ Martin Kosuka, very sharp knife!, and I was stuck at a gas station on the Parkway in CT, walked over in the rain to a State Trooper, forgot that I had the knife on! and as I leaned in towards the his car the sheath pulled towards his door, magnets you see, very strong magnets! Boy did I start sweating! but I was lucky that he didn't notice! I think I prefer in the waist band from now on....whew.

RJ makes several ways to carry his knives.

I guesss it all comes down to what you're using it for. I do alot of mountain biking and I wear my Spyderco Native around my neck in its sheath, usually under a loose t-shirt. Its primary purpose when I'm riding is for protection. Last summer there were a fair amoung of assaults and theft of bikes where I ride (inner city park). One day I was riding and saw two guys by the side of the trail. I stopped to gulp some water and noticed that there were two guys but only one bike. Uh, oh, condition red. One of them approached me and started commenting about how nice my bike was, what did I pay for it, etc. etc... I reached under my shirt and pulled out the Native and just held it in my palm, unopened but made sure the guy noticed it. I chatted for a few seconds, drank some water, got back on my bike and rode away. To this day, I truly believe their intention was to steal my bike and the simple presence of my neck knife changed their plans.

I have said it before....I consider neck knives a size range, not just a method of carry. Many of my customers have more than one sheath made for there knives or a multi-position sheath that will allow them various carry methods.
I find myself carrying the small fixed blades more now than my folders. Even a 7.5" knife that has a thin profile can be carried quite comfortably in many positions as well as around the neck.

Thanks for all the great advice, I'm thinking about getting a REKAT Hobbit Fang (if nothing else for the Tolken reference) and I wonder if there are any more opinions on that knife?

I'm not a big fan of them. I gues they have uses, but a pocket knife does the same. Defensivly they aren't all that useful IMO. Like Raker said, they take geting ued to I suppose
