I have done some searching and can't find a clear answer. How can I tell if a Schrade was NOT made with Swinden key construction? I know the later ones were. Were the Schrade-Walden era knifes made this way? I have seen some with visible thru-bolster pins.

I think schrade used swinden starting in 1960, which was also about the same time they stopped using bone as a standard handle material. If the handles are delrin, then I would say it's swinden as a general rule but with schrade there are some oddballs.

I am quite sure i saw a derlin handled Walden with thru-bolster pins...I guess an oddball? Ugh.

Possibly an oddball, I really don't know how many early delrin waldens could have been pin through. I have a reddish "wavy" jig bone 881 that is swinden. There's also always the possibility of a non factory repair, can't say for sure without seeing the knife you mention.
