The first rule is BIGGER IS BETTER............unless you have to carry it down a flight of stairs into the basement. I have a Tiawanese table top and it sits in my basement and does a passable job.
I have a taig mini-mill and also a mini-lathe, and those puppys do anything I ask of them; just on a smaller scale. the mill is set up with a variable speed DC motor which makes it nice. I make folders so I don't feel the need for anything bigger. Their built well and as accurate as you need them to be. Now you can't go hogging off .375 or .500 cuts like you could with a nice Bridgeport type mill, but like I said I make folders and don't need to make those cuts. Might I suggest this web site, www.desktopmachineshop.com for more info.
I'm selling a Taig mini mill that I bought last year from Desk Top Machinery. Nothing at all wrong with it, I'm just gettin some money up for a metal lathe. It has a set of collets and few other accessories. It'll come in the original boxes. I need $450 for it.
Oh man, why do you have to tempt me like that Michael! I'm saving up for a Beaumont grinder but I've been eyeing those mini mills and this discussion.....gonna have to think on it.
Well, what I really need is the grinder. The mill can wait a little while more. Let me guess, Michael, you would rather have the lathe so you can turn stop pins etc.....Am I close?
Well, now you have me wondering. Since most knives are flat what can you possibly do with a lathe besides turning pins and such? OK, maybe make guard pieces for fixed blades, but what about folders?
hahaha sorry I had to
Kevin you should have a pop up come up each time an old thread is threatened to be activated after a certain age saying yoo-hoo take a peek at the date..
don't feel to bad Joe I've been caught after being here for years
