Are the days of the S30V Military Numbered

With Crucible potentially to be no more in Sept., I was wondering if I needed to accellerate my plans to get a Mili in S30V. Love my Para, and as a result I had moved the Mili lower on my list - that and the economy. Wondering if it needs to move up the list now, thoughts?

Its very possible that someone with buy Crucible and continue making the steel, its also possible that someone might buy the rights to the steel it is after all a very popular steel.

Bottom line though is that the Military has gone through many steel changes over its life and if Spyderco is forced to produce it in a new steel I’m confident that they will chose a good one as a replacement. Also I believe that a redesign of the Military is happening some time in the future.

I agree with J, and if you look up some of the stuff Sal has posted on the subject, it shows they are already looking at other metals if need be.

Well, if there is a change of steels, one of two things will happen. Either it will be to something the trend-setters think is better - stronger - faster, and the price of the S30V versions of all models currently using S30V will tank, or the replacement will be something they pan, and the price will rise. Or, of course, Crucible may still survive, or S30V be picked up by another steel company. Probably even odds on all three scenarios right now.

I am, admittedly, not a "steel head". The only S30V models I have any real interest in are the Native and future versions of the Sage. But, for my money, if they have to switch, 154CM would be my first choice. I was extremely impressed by it in the Manix 2. Damn good edge holding at a significantly lower price.

Agreed on all fronts, to me, S30V has been synonomous with Spyderco. We'll see what happens!

I must be a Big Dummy, because I can't tell what steel is used unless I look at the stamp.

So far the 154CM on my Manix2 is holding up very well.
I certainly don't want Crucible to go away, but a 154CM Military could be an option. It would also make for a more affordable Military too.

*runs around in circles hysterically* I had no idea until I read this today

154CM and VG-10 it be then, 154CM was my first "super steel" before S30V so I suppose there isn't any harm going back to it :D

Remember when ATS34-154CM was a top of the line steel?
It is not that is is not good steel just an older one.

CPM154 is the crucible version. So 154CM will still be around.
Negative, that's what the CM stands for in 154CM, it is also a Crucible metal. Of course, ATS-34 and 14-4CrMo are the same composition, and RWL-34 is a PM version just as CPM154 is.

I'm sure you'll pick up a S30V Millie without too much trouble, in the unlikely event the steel disappears forever when Crucible goes into liquidation. There are plenty in circulation already.
