Are the handle slabs removeable on my Yarborough

I recently became the proud owner of one of these but after I got home I noticed that the edges of the handle slabs could use a little sanding. Are they removeable...I realize that they're held on by screws but are they glued on too? Thanks in advance...
 
Not only are they attached by screws, there is a thin layer of 3M VHB double sided tape that is die cut to match them.
