Are the NEW Old Timers JUNK or NOT??

Hey all,

I used to have a Sharpfinger when I was a kid. For the past month or so I have been obsessing on what would be a good and inexpensive hunting/field dressing knife to get for upcoming pig hunting. I have looked at the Bucks, Gerbers, and you name it. LOTS of GREAT knives out there and it's tough to decide. Then it hit me, why not an Old Timer? Those Old Timers have had to gut out hundreds of thousands of game animals over the years and it would be great for me. Then I found out that they aren't made in the US anymore and the new ones are from China and are made of stainless instead of the high carbon like they were back when.

Learning that hasn't deterred me from wanting one if the newones are decent and as good as the old ones. If they are junk, well that's another story.

The one I am looking for now is the 150 Deerslayer and the 152 Sharpfinger. Can you all tell me if these new ones are even worth having and how they compare to the original ones?

Also, if you don't mind, what is a reasonable price I could expect to pay for one of the USA made models in decent shape? I don't mind if the knives are used, just not abused.

If you know of another place where I can look for these knives besides Ebay, would you mind passing it on to me?

Thanks for your time and help.

new ones are junk. you can still pick up the orignal usa ones on ebay for inexpensive.. Jerod

The new ones are more often than not junk, take a look at how much they can be picked for. These discussions on the Chinese made knives have been shunned on these pages, to the point that the description of the forum page notes, these pages are for the USA made Schrade knives only. Just letting you know before the tirade begins. It has happend a few times and is not pretty.

The Deerslayer is a 15 OT, not a 150 T. There must be close to a thousand 15's and 152's on ebay every year, U.S. made. The dirty looking ones are fairly cheap and they clean right up to use. Allow me to show my personal prejudice and suggest a 165 OT instead, but they are all fine. So is the 160 OT. Good hunting!

Hi if you go to the kmarts in your area you just might find the exact copy of the 152 with the package saing outdoor life, and on the clampack made in usa.My local kmart had one left marked down to 12 dollars, went back 2 days later it was gone. Dont know about quality but their exact copies, made by Rigid i think before they went bankrupt.Just remember most of the oudoor life knives were made in china fyi, thanks

Also bear cutlery makes the same knife if your interested in where their made.these are made in alabama, decent quality for the price

I believe the Outdoor Life and Rigid branded ones were both made in USA by the former United Cutlery. Both of mine are stainless, but are of decent quality.

In my opinion, the (USA vintage) box in that listing is worth more than the sheath OR the knife which I'm sure are imported. The cheesy sheath juxtaposed with the beautiful wood grain box jumped right out at me.

The stamp on the back of that knife should look like this:

Why buy a cheap import when you can buy a next-to-new USA made Schrade on eBay or a million other auction sites for less than the new Chinese cheapies? Sheaths aren't as good either. USA Schrade is still easy to find. Grab yourself a slightly beat-up "user" for next to nothing. It will last you your lifetime if you take care of it. For me it's more a personal boycott thing. Taylor Brands still waves the American flag on their packaging but the reality is that they killed a 100 year old USA tradition and put lots of good people out of work. If Taylor called them "Taylors" and displayed the Chinese flag on his box I might buy the cheapest one just to check them out. As it is I just see them as trying to fool people and that bothers me. Schrade is gone. Taylor killed it. Period.

Very well said.

I feel sorry for the sap that got stuck with that blade. It's clearly a misrepresentation, but the seller never mentions the origin of the knife.:jerkit:

He'll probably sell a hundred more just like it, and still have 100% feedback.

Yup, buyer beware!!!!!

lots of talk about imports from the other side of the pacific. ilove my old scrade and camilus knives .ihave afew schrades in mint condition and iwill keep them that way.how very sad we can never again buy aknife that was made in that great old ellenville plant.ihave an old copy of knife digest that has an article on camilus refered to as the quiet giant of knifedom .now both schrade and camilus are gone. damned shame .let us not forget the reason taylor brands have made it big people like us buy the stuff because they are CHEAP. get what you pay for.

I found 3 of them at my local Kmart. On the clamshell package it says made in USA and on the knife it says that too. These are stainless steel instead of carbon like the original 152. I might pick one up.
