The wings on the PowerLock are actually covers that make using the tool more comfortable. They can be removed without affecting the operation or usefulness of the tool. I have tried the tool both ways and they really do make a big difference in the comfort in your hand. Just my 2 cents.

The wings make it more comfortable on the hand when using the pliers. I've been using the Powerlock for a little over a year on the job. I have removed the wings for short periods of time. The wings improve plier comfort tremendously.
On the down side, the wings slow access to the tools, but for me I prefer having them than not.
On the plus side, the phillips driver is really durable. I use it almost every day and it's still serviceable. It's also sized to fit almost any size phillips head.
