Are the wood inlays treated?

Hi there,

I just got my first small Sebenza and it has lignum wood inlays.
Fantastic knife! My question is: Are the wood inlays treated in any manner? Are they stabilized?

If not, should I treat them in some way to increase its life span and preserve their appearance?

I can't stop fondling this knife!

Hey Burton! So you did end up getting a small too...Nice!

I thought you were gonna go for a plain though...

Can't wait to see this one!

Hi Rumble,

Yep, the wood is stabilized - but it can still shrink on you if appropriate care is not given. In particular, I can think of one member (K-guy?) who ran his under hot water after a deer skinning session, and ended up with _slightly_ shrunken inlays.

Not to worry, though - if the inlays shrink for whatever reason, CRK can put new ones in. Whether or not it is covered under warranty depends on the reason for shrinkage :)

I've also heard of other members using Rennaisance Wax to keep the wood shiny and preserve its appearance.

Congratulations!

Matthew

BOK, here are two pics until I see you in the shop.

Starfish, thanks! I'll try to find a suitable wax for it.
I wonder if I should clean the wood first with something.

Rumble, I just spoke to Pam at CR Knives about the very same thing. Most of the woods are treated, but there are a few that are not. Desert ironwood and ebony are among the woods that I recall Pam as saying that they are not treated. As for lignum, I can't comment. Pam also recommended furniture polish for the untreated wood inlays as it replaces the oils.

Groovy. I guess it wouldn't hurt to just use some sort of protectant/oil anyways. Thanks!
