Are there any GOOD, heavy, steel-handeld folders?

Anyone remember the old CRKT Commander Series?
Ya know the Summit Series that evolved from the Commander Series?

I kinda like those knives with the heavy, steel handles. I love the utility-balance of those knives and the way they just STAY PUT in your hand when you open your hand to use your fingers for something else. I like the way I can beat on things with the butt of these half-pound knives.

The only thing is that over the past couple years I've developed a taste for better knives with better materials, but I still like the feel of those clunky steel-handled knives for working knives.

Sure, I love G10 and I like some of the aluminum-handled knives, but there's a hole in my heart for a chunky, heavy steel-handled knife like the CRKT Commander or Summit Series but with REAL QUALITY craftsmanship and materials...

I've tried a Buck Strider and I guess it's OK, but it just doesn't fit the bill.
Spyderco doesn't quite cut it either. They have some steel-handled knives, but they're thin and light.
What else is there? I'm looking at spending about $100 (give or take).

Please help put a quality, hefty, steel-handled knife in my hand!

A SS Spyderco Police sounds as though it fit your requirements pretty well even though it appears you've ruled it out. It's a very strong knife with an excellent lock, The VG10 blade is superior steel, the slim lines make it disappear into your pocket and the weight is there in your hand providing a good balance and feel. And it's not so heavy that it pulls your jeans down aroung your ankles when you clip it on.

I have a SS Spyderco Pro Grip. It's small, but hefty. A little too hefty, actually. I'd love a Pro Grip with a ti handle.

Why do people keep sending me ideas for CRKT knives? Read my original post. :)
If I wanted a CRKT, I'd just stick to the Commander or Summit series which I like.
What I'm looking for is a better QUALITY knife with a steel handle and the heft of the CRKT knives I like.;)

Because CRKT has improved significantly in recent months with regard to quality. You don't necessarily need to find a hefty custom at 500% more cost, to gain 5% more in performance and/or features. No flames please, this is just a generalization. :p

Besides, not many people shop for a custom folder with weight as the deciding factor. There are a lot of less expensive quality factory pieces that have some mass to them - like CRKT!

I'm thinking the Sog Sogwinder series... there's a whole bunch of them.. Stingray, Sogwinder II.. etc etc.. but the Sogwinder is the big one with lots of Stainless steel in the handle it has Karton inserts in the handle as well, so it doesn't feel the same as the steel ones, but very nice feel and i think they're abou $80 or so..

I know you said steel handled, but have you looked at the Al Mar SERE 2000? It is thick, heavy, and has a nice thick end on the handle with lots of steel showing (5/8" between the G-10 slabs). Otherwise, I'd go with the SOG knives mentioned above.

Hmm. I like SOG. Maybe I'll check those out.
They're sheath knives aren't they? No pocketclip?

Well, quite frankly, the CRKT quality is extremely high and you're going to have to spend well more than $100.00 to top them quality-wise.
The only thing CRKT knives lack in the quality department is the very high-end steels on most of their knives (AUS-6 and AUS-8 for most of them, but you can get some older ATS-34 CRKT knives).
And if the truth be known, most folks would'nt notice the differnce between AUS-8 and VG-10 or ATS-34 in everyday cutting tasks.

Still, if you don't want CRKT or Spyderco, then maybe a SOG knife is what you're looking for (I think there's one called the Tomcat that might fit the bill).
Or shell out the extra loot for a titanium Sebenza...
but I really recommend you check out the new CRKT Prowler model. If you're looking for a heavy strong knife you might really like this one.

Good luck,
Allen.

Mine didn't come with a Pocket Clip, but came with a nylon sheath, its a lockback.. and its damn heavy.. the blade is like really thick too.

Camillus EDC w/ Talonite?

oh...oops - it's $150

maybe used?

The Buck Alpha Hunter folder model with ATS-34 blade should meet your stated requirements nicely and is available well within your $100.00 limit. It is quite hefty in the hand with solid lock-up.

First off, the CRKT Commander series don't have steel handles, they have zinc handles. Secondly, my knife that I would recommend is the Greco Griffon. VERY strong frame lock, nice blade geometry, nice heft, comes with a nylon sheath, and is under a hundred bucks at cqcknives.com Only problem is the lack of a clip. If the Greco doesn't work, sounds like you don't have the right tool for the job...

Although it DOES have rubber (Kraton) inserts, and no clip, the SOG Tomcat is probably your BEST choice, as it IS one SOLID folder. (You can also get the Tomcat II, which has a slightly different blade-shape, and comes with thumb-studs rather than the "nail-nick" of the Tomcat.).

I haven't gotten around to buying one of these yet, but I've handled one in store and they are about as rock solid as a folder can be. ;)
