The recent thread regarding throwing darts got me thinking about the mid 1980's dart barrels I've got from my father and grandfather that I'd like to try and identify.

I know for a fact 3 pairs of them are Unicorns.
But others I'm not sure about.

This is a pair my dad bought while in some local bar tournament, and I have absolutely no clue what they could be. They may actually be early 90's unlike everything else.
I believe the 6-7mm barrels are tungsten, the shafts use a snap on poly flight.

These are my grandfather's darts which came in a 1986 dated blue plastic unicorn case, I have not found this exact pattern in any of their old book of darts I downloaded but believe they do belong in the case I got them In.

These next ones my dad gave to me as a kid which I believe are also from the 80's and came with gold scorpion unicorn specials flights.

These were my dad's first darts.
I believe they're a unicorn satinlux but came with silver comet flights on them

These poly tips are also unknown to me.

Theres two pairs of these, so they could've came with the dartboard.

I think I'd like to identify the first ones the most, and I'm hoping someone knows what they are.

the plastic tips are similar to ones I used to have for a set by Halex. it was part of modern set with the holes in the board

Sounds about right, and there was some old halex flights in the bin of a matching color.
My dad probably bought them in the late 90's with the electronic boardhe eventually gave away.
Now I'm just hoping to identify the tungsten darts with spinner shafts.

They look like piranhas to me or maybe harrows. Nice narrow barrels. Just how I liked them back in my dart days. I still have 2 sets of harrows PowerPoints in 23&24grams. A boatload of shafts n flights n a regular n a practice bristleboard. Loved darts even won 26grand in a tournament in Atlantic city in 92 or 93. Can't remember. That was back in my drinkin days. Haven't drank since 1/12 94.

Thanks for the info, I've figured out that those shafts from my dad's darts would be DynaStar but I don't know if they made the barrels.

They do look like they could be harrows.

I couldn't for the life of me understand why barrels have to be made from TC. Only the needles would want a TC construction, and only for maximum wear resistance.

I think it's something to do with size to weight ratio.
They do make tungsten fishing sinkers after all.

The barrels aren't tungsten carbide, they're tungsten... entirely for the ability to pack weight into the narrowest shaft possible which allows you to group them tighter.

Sounds like an un-necessary use of the metal in pure form, IMHO. Stainless steel won't cut it? Or maybe brass with a lead core?

Tungsten is almost three times the density of stainless steel and almost twice the density of lead...the barrels would have to be 2-3 times the diameter for the same weight. It's a perfect use for the metal to achieve a desired result.

Ok, I finally get it. Was an arguing point for decades with me and my friends (don't ask why it lasted that long.) My fault is assuming the metal was used for its hardness and wear-resistance, not its density.

All about the size/weight. Tough to fit all 3 fat darts in the double bull or the trip 20 for that matter. Ton eighty or one hundred eighty is the max in 501 or 301. Most leagues give out a trophy/plaque for hitting a ton eighty in a sanctioned match. I've hit two in league play and loads just playing for fun/drinks back in the day. 6 corks is another impressive toss. Only did that once.

You sound like a good player.
I'm not anywhere close, if I was in a match with say 10 people I'd come in 15th place :D

I am only a dart throwing expert when I'm drunk. The best games of 21 I ever played was when I drank myself to the point of seeing triple. Just aimed for the one in the middle. Hit absolutely everything I called that night.

That must be why I've never been very good at darts and why my dad's not very good anymore :D

You sure it was the alcahol and not the pretzels and peanuts ?
'cause I'll eat myself sick on pretzels and peanuts if it'll make me good at darts :D
