Are there any?

After taking a rather lengthy break from knives and buying new ones for the collection I have begun to look at the collection and wonder is there anything I am missing. The answer quite simply is yes now that I think of it
I need/want a trapper or Barlow pattern from the following years of manufacture.
1982 my birth year
2004 the year I got married
2011 the year my oldest son was born
2016 the year my youngest son was born
I think I can reasonably find the newer three knives but I have a feeling that 1982 version will be my grail that I will die searching for.
Are there any knives missing in your collection?

Case are dated by year and stamp.
With GEC you can even nail the day of the year, I have a GEC 25 made the day my wife and I were married, 08/08/08!

Yep I know about Case dating stamps by year and am planning to start looking harder for the ones I'm needing. I am just curious what if any knives others believe are missing

I am collecting by brand at the moment, the Tuna Valley line. I like it because there are not too many made each year, only 3-4 patterns released each year, starting in 2012, with a few handle varieties of each. There are over 1/2 of them I'm still on the hunt for.

You might find some alox Victorinox Soldier or Wenger Standard Issue knives with some of those dates... '82 and 04. Victorinox replaced the alox Soldier and Wenger is no longer around (bought by Victorinox) but the new Soldier model also has dates stamped on it. You could get the 11 and 16 years in the new version. Just a suggestion.

Btw, the 80s were rough years for Case... they struggled pretty much from the late 70s up until Zippo bought them. Some collectors only buy from the early 70s or earlier. So a knife from 82 should be reasonably priced.

To answer the question you posed - there are plenty of knives I'd like to have, but I don't really have a specific grail that's realistically in my price range. I won't be in the market for Remington R1123s and Bose customs any time soon. I would, though, like to try out a more moderately priced custom slipjoint, though. That's on my list for the near future.

Jake's certainly correct about early 80's Case knives being reasonably priced. I recently picked up an unused, minty '82 6318 Stockman with really nice bone for very little money. Also, check out Bob Cargill's Cripple Creek knives from the early 80s. I have an '84 Blood Brothers Barlow that I'm really fond of. They did a 2000 piece run of Knife World Trappers in '82.

Fight'n Roosters were beautifully made knives from Solingen, Germany in 1982, and can still be found reasonably priced on the big auction site. Most of the time they have the date stamped or etched on the knife, so easy to tell.

When I starting looking for a knife from my birth year (80) a Case was easy to find. I ended up with 2 different patterns, there are lots of different choices for good prices out there waiting to be found:)

As others have said, CASE offers a rich resource for this kind of thing. The boxes very often show the actual date of manufacture or boxing.

For the later knives, GEC will provide you with a range of satisfying answers...

What's missing in my pile of knives is a Serp Pen 3 3/8" - 3.5" sunk point, Rat-Tails, in a lighter bone or Stag. Can't find it and can't seem to get anybody to make it either. Just hope Mr Ohta takes a fancy to the pattern....:D

I've got a Case 6318HE from 1980, the year I was born. I don't really have any other significant dates to commemorate. Well, maybe one (you know what I mean), but a knife really isn't something to commemorate that.

Don't be shy of Case Knives made in the early 1980's - I have a number of them made from 80 - 82 and can find no real difference between them and the late 1970's Case Knives. One of my favorite EDC's is a 1980 6318. As for a grail knife; I cannot seem to find a nice Barlow made with a swedged/long pull spear blade, pen secondary, and sawcut bone handles. OH

I'm in somewhat the same boat as totkst1 where I'm looking for an American made from '75, '93, '09, '11

I'm a little less specific because while I'm looking for Stockman, Congress, Railsplitter and Whittler types but if something catches my eye that's good too.

I figure having a good quality knife for the various milestones in my life will make a nice story for my son one day.

That is exactly my plan. Give the kids something to fight about when I get old so I can laugh at them for not being able to share

Collecting the Bluegrass Winchester 270 Cartridge Series knives. Have 15 of them so I do have some holes in the collection. The missing are either too scarce or too pricy for my budget. The thrill of the chase continues though.
