I'm getting a good deal on a used CKF Morrf knife but with no pouch or paperwork. I did some Google and didn't seem to see any fakes. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've seen fake Decepticons and T90s, but never a fake Morrf for whatever that's worth.

Just so we get this out of the way, oh the irony in you asking this question with that screen name. You know name changes are cheap right? :D

And yes, there are fakes. I've been out of the keeping track of fakes game fora bit but I came across a fake CKF years ago I got in a package buy. Don't remember the details but if it was happening then, you can bet it has only gotten worse.

I'm not doubting it, but can we post a source when we accuse a knifemaker of lying about their manufacturing origins?

Nobody is accusing CKF of lying about their manufacturing origins, are they? CKF has been pretty open about where their knives are made, unless something has changed. They've described on their own website They've posted here, IIRC, about using Chinese CNC shops to crank out their knives and then inspecting/finishing/whatever the knives in Russia. Hang on, I'll go search and see if I can provide you with a link.

(edit, since I couldn't quickly find the post I remembered I have replaced that bit with something I did quickly find on their website)

OOOohh. I didn't know they were open about sourcing certain parts in China. I always thought CKF was 100% made in Russia. I guess they never explicitly advertise it. Could be an Olamic Cutlery or Brous Blades thing were they don't say where it's from, but they kinda lead you to thinking it's domestically produced without ever actually saying either way.

Here you go, from an archived copy of their site:

https://web.archive.org/web/20150206014033/http://customknifefactory.com/about-us.htm

A quote from that page:

CKF's own website said:
We are located in Moscow (Russia), ordering best materials from USA suppliers and using CNC machines for making details in the best Chinese workshop ever. Our location helps keep our costs in line which is why we can offer you great knives with TOP-materials while still providing you with affordable prices. It all helps us achieve our goal: Low Prices - Superior Quality.

Check archive.org's archive of their site and you'll see that they used to be open about it and took it off their site at some point, either because they've moved production in-house or because they don't want folks to know where they're made, I couldn't tell you which.

EDIT: actually, it turns out they're still up front about it, it's just not on their CKF page, it's on their FRWK page.

In any case, wherever they're made they've put out some great designs that are very well made, though I don't see myself buying another. I'll keep the 8-10 I have, though, they're really nice knives.

There should be a way to get to the bottom of this, though, as Mike from CKF posted here recently--let's give this a try:

@CKF: are you still having the knives made in a Chinese shop and then finishing/assembling/whatever them in Russia or are they entirely a Russian product these days?

Giving a quick glance at their site I can't find anything saying they're "Made in Russia", so fair game.

See #13 above. They sort of say they do and sort of don't, and always kind of have. They left it a big vague, even when they were talking about the China piece.

Their selling website (FRWK) still has the same vague "some US stuff, some Russian stuff, some Chinese manufacturing", incidentally:

OUR KNIVES: They say the quality of our knives many other makers would charge at least double for. We call them "midtech" or "production" knives, but want them to be like customs. And many people compare them with custom ones :) We do not copy one old design with slight changes. All our knives are different. Limited. Numbered. Made with Russian and American materials, Austrian steel, best possible outsource Chinese machining, finished and customized with assiduous Russian hands. And yes, we are first on market who add additional case, pouch, all little screws, full pivot system, bearings, steel lock insert and even clip to every knife shipped.

I mean, to their credit they've been up front about it. There are plenty of cases where people appear to have resold Chinese knives, passing them off as products of the USA. Tim Britton, QuarterMantis, etc. At least CKF has been open about it.

I like the "pure Russian" or "more or less" maybe "pure mix of best world breeds"... whatever stuff.. Jeez, just gimme a rest..
