Are there too many knives?

As time goes by, I get catalogs from various knife sellers, such as AG Russell, SMKW and such.

I flip through the pages, and dang there is something on nearly every page that I like! This wasn't always the case, but nearly every manufacturer has some killer designs out there, and I need more $$ to get a piece of them all!

Anyone else have this issue?

Admire the design or the unique features but resist the urge to get the latest and greatest, unless you are sure that you will use it and put it to use. More than likely you have several that will satisfy the same itch already, and you are buying to satisfy the need for something new. Take time to get the older ones out of storage, rediscover why you liked them in the first place, and maybe that will help. I finally broke down and got a Mora and an Opinel, just to try them and the cost was only a small amount, but I waited until I thought I was ready to try them.

Yes, too many. Have often thought about a 2 for 1 solution, where you would have to get rid of (sell or trade or give away) 2 knives for every one you buy or acquire. Just never got around to trying it.

Every day I seem to find a new one I want, from makers I've never heard of ... the list is getting long ... and expensive!

I seem to be getting into automatics, I'm trying to resist for legal reasons due to my location, but I am quite creative getting what I want.

Must resist...

I'm rather fond of the market now. How often do you think to yourself, "I'd like a knife with x, y and z characteristics" and it not already exist? Very rare for me.

By now I've figured out what I like, I think. The majority of "NEW" offerings don't really appeal to me at this point. Somewhat to the contrary when a maker offers a cheap line or a new series with way too many offerings reaching too far out there Im often disappointed that they are "trying to hard". I almost feel they cheapen the entire brand by doing so, I know it's sales/profit driven but I don't like it.
Sig Saur really disappointed me in the same way in the last 10 years, with all of their rainbow iridescent titanium diamond plate wrapped in barbwire zombie edition pistols. Make the 226, 229, 225, 227 & 220 and make them flawlessly. You can grow and move forward with the 238, 938, MCX & MPX, (dare I say 320), but reel in the cheap Chinese rebranded optics and red dots.

I feel your pain. Im constantly on here looking at everyone's edc knife and thinking “thats nice, I wouldn’t mind having that!” Then i realize all the ones i want would total over a grand....sigh

Oh I wish all the knives I wanted totaled to a grand. I could look at 2 knives and be up to $1500 in a heart beat :(. Expensive taste and all. These are why I'm broke (and about 50 others):

Would anyone like to go back to the good ol days, when if you wanted a locking folding, about all the choices were a Buck or a Schrade? Not me, I'm happy to have so many nice choices and keep 'em coming! :D

It takes a little experience to figure out what you really like in a knife. When I was early into collecting I wanted every cool knife I saw. I now know alot more what I am looking for in a knife. It took owning a bunch of knives to really figure this out though.

Also at different periods I go through different phases of what I want. Right now I like smaller front flippers. Previous to this it was small folders like the small sebbie 21 or the Spdie techno. Previous to that it was small edc fixed blades like the Guardian 3. Previous to that small urban self defense fixed blades like the SOCP or La Griffe and on and on all the way back to the tactifool folders that were my first love.

That is all part of the fun of the journey. Each step along the way I learn abit more which influences my decisions in the next step.

I'm on a tight budget when it comes to toys. I've bought one knife in the last year and currently in the downsizing mode. My knife hobby has been replaced with firearms BUT the wife has taken up the firearm hobby (she even got her CPL summer '16) so it works out.

Better to have too many options then too few.

It would help if the Mtech and Tacforces of the world fell into a deep pit too.
