Are there two Ontario Ranger Shiv Designs?
The specs are the same for both
Specifications

* Overall Length: 8.375"
* Blade Length: 4.5"
* Blade Thickness: 0.1563"

I like the Knifecenter knife without the ricasso. I was wondering if there are two designs and which is the latest.

Is the cutting edge 4.5" or less?

Here is one from Chestnut Ridge

Here is another from Knifecenter

as I understand it, the knives look different because the orange handle knife has a slightly different handle. The blaze orange handles are made of G10, whereas the other knife handle is made of micarta. I don't know why they would make different designs for different materials, they just did. I've heard that the blade itself is 4.5 inches, but the actual cutting surface is only 4. I've been looking at this knife too, and it looks pretty good. The only thing I'm trying to decide on is if i want micarta/G10 handles, or paracord wrapped ones for around 12 bucks cheaper.

Here's one in orange looks different than the knifecenter.com orange knife.

The only difference I can see between the two is the absence of jibbing on the blade's spine (the one on Knife Center's website).

**EDIT** After examining it further, I also see that the ricasso is different as well.

Bottom one has longer scales. That's the only difference.
The ricasso and jibbing are the same, just covered by the scales.

That is what I was thinking. They say the blade length on is 4.5" in both descriptions. Do you know the actual cutting/sharpened edge length?

I think blade length is measured from the tip of the knife to the handle. So if the cord wrapped knife is the correct length, then the cutting edge is about 4" not 4.5" - my guess.

Ranger's "blade length" is typically the length of the sharpened portion.

The difference in the picture may just be "pre-Ontatio Ranger" (bottom) vs. "Ontarion Ranger" (top).

Hello everyone!

I wanted to respond to this post to try to clear up some of your questions. The original images we used were provided by Ontario before the knives were ever in stock. The quality of the images were not very good so I went ahead and took new shots of the ones we have in stock. You can see them here. We don't have the black or green cord wrapped models in stock so I wasn't able to get new images for those. I also attached a quick snapshot I took of three models side-by-side (see below). The actual blade length is about 4-5/8" with a cutting edge of 4".

Hope this helps.
