Are there varying screw depths for torx screws?

I wanted to see what a 586 looked like without the scale so I used a t6 to unscrew the aluminum portion. No problem. As I moved on to the g10 side, the black screws stripped immediately with the lightest pressure. Is this because I used the incorrect bit? I had this happen on a Mini grip as well :(
I just don't see how the screw stripped so easily. I was being as careful as possible..
By varying depths I mean that the black screws feel very shallow in comparison to the silver screws. The pocket clip screws feel fine

Quick answer; Yes. You can ask for replacements (T6 for screws and T10 for the pivot on most) for the scales; but they Are different lengths that can damage the knife if too long or short. That's why they (almost) always ask what the model is when we call Customer Service. Sorry 'bout stripping that screw...some techs, depending, use Loc-Tite, others never do so it pays to be careful.

Luckily the scale is still on tight! So the knife is perfectly fine, just a little bummed that that happened.
I'll just get it fixed if I ever need to send the knife to Benchmade.
Thanks for the reply :)

What kind of bits are you using? It's possibly a problem with the driver as opposed to the screws.

I have had this happen to me on several occasions, most recently when trying to remove the scales on my 940. Benchmade likes Loc-Tite a lot, and applies it liberally to almost all body and pivot screws. This attributes to the stripping. I use high quality Wiha brand torx drivers and it still happens, so my feeling is it is a combinatiin of the Loc-Tite and poor quality screws. I also have this issue with some Kershaw's, but almost never with Spyderco for some reason.

Most knife manufacturers use Loc-Tite.It's always best to apply heat to the screw with the tip of a soldering pencil before loosening imho.

Bah, beat me to it. Yet again. (damnit Joe, cut that out... ;))

Indeed, there are different screw lengths. Depending on the specific application; clips screws apparently being the most critical/different.

If you are looking to buy the machine screws on the aftermarket, error on the side of long. It is far esier to file off the extra length than it is to strech a screw that is too short....

And yes, there is definitely a difference in quality between bit manufacturers. a no-name bit may/will not fit as well and a brand-name bit will. The bits in the BMK Blue box will fit 99% of BM screws properly, there is the odd one that does not work as well as expected. The no name screw bits I have bought work fine most if the time, but as soon as I have be precise or have to put any torque on them, they simply don't hack it.

If the bits you have don't appear to work correctly, then you would be wise to invest in a better set. The BMK Blue box is a good starting point, followed by a set of Wiha bits at the higher end...
