Are These Any Good?

These are very good and very expensive whetstones.

If there is a negative side to DMT it is that they are too good (they will flat remove some steel so don't drink a bunch of Cokes or coffee before using one) and are they are expensive.

They come in various grits, course, medium, fine, and extra fine. They also sell them in different styles.

I would suggest that you check out the DMT website for details.

I had to fiddle around a bit to learn how to use them and hold a constant angle but am getting very good edges now in a short period of time.

They don't have anything like some sharpening systems that give you constant edge angles although you can buy a little angle guide from DMT that sets an angle. You put it under your blade when sharpening.

You don't use any oil or water with these, it is not required.

Hey Peter...

My suggestion would be to go with the solid DMT bench stone,,and not the one with holes...
These work better on the tips of knives...

As far as them being any good.....

Yes they are Very good...
I have solid Fine and Extra fine....

They will sharpen a knife very well and last for a really long time....

Good investment..

The flat, holeless diasharps ROCK. The holes dont clog up as fast, but grab a moist towel and wipe it as you sharpen

I do have DMT benchstones, same as on the pic, just dual, that is two sided, fine and ex-fine(red/green). mini review here. In short I love them. Fine is more than enough for general sharpening, and ex-fine is giving semi polished edge, well closer to satin I guess.
If you can sharpen freehanded those rock. Just use very light pressure not to break diamonds out and that's pretty much it.

As far as I can tell grit for various stones from different makers isn't the same. So, for DMT fine (red one) makes excellent general purpose sharpener, at least in my experience.

I have the little red keyring one - I think it's medium. I just acquired it a few weeks ago. I've had the green diafold one for several years and it's still going strong. Smaller ones are nice and portable for those "touch ups" As others have mentioned, just need some water and wipe it off to clean. And yes, they are very good :D

I got the 8" duosharp with coarse and fine sides. I find I rarely need the coarse side, maybe the fine / extra fine would have been a better choice. Anyway they really do work quite well. The DMTs are the top of the line among diamond sharpeners. Just remember that 20 seconds on a diamond stone is equivalent to about 5 minutes on a regular stone.
