Now, I am not asking if they are better or have as much depth. I just want to know if the arts of Zulu stickfighting and Irish stickfighting were created within their respective lands from indigenous techniques, or if they are nationalist spins on FMA techniques? Website info with pictures would be great if possible. Thanks in advance.

stormbringer maybe you been reading about this on kungfuonline.com, dont believe those idiots they are racial and arrogant and dont want to belive anything good can come out of africa.

i saw a documentary when i was a boy about warfare around the world. and i remember a section about how hand to hand wars is fought in tribes of african, and the stickfighting was there. they use two sticks that are short like arnis, and they use long poles like a bostaff. the segment i saw they were fighting! man, real fighting, not swinging them around in patterns like most people. i can only respect the skill and the ability to use it very fast in a real fight.

i bet the same people who say that there fake, use to think the philippines dint have martial arts until the magazines started to pay attention to it. right now, burt richardson is into it, and you know how they love to kiss his ass. soon when everybody is doing it they will follow you watch. so dont listen to those idiots. they will be jealous if they ever get to see a tape of the fights. right now, they are just being devils.

It's possible that the African documentary mentioned is the same footage from Dogbrothers Vol. 1, where two tribes settled a feud with poles. One man fights while bleeding from the neck during line fighting, then a duel between two armored pole fighters is shown. Both men spent after swinging hard and fast.

Irish stickfighting, I can't say but anyone whose held a shillelaigh (sp) knows how similar it feels to rattan.

Howdy Stormbringer - I don't know about Zulu anything, but I can cue you in on the Irish stickfighting. It is absolutely real, and not a repackaging of the FMA. If you want more reading on the Bata (or Irish stick) then follow the link K William posted to the Bata discussion form, see Ken Prenger's Irish stick fighting page, and stop by the American Heritage Fighting Arts Association to check out our bata and cane links and articles http://alliancemartialarts.com/america-cane.html

To the best of my knowledge, Ken is the only person in America who is actively promoting the Bata in a big way. I learned from him, and I know he has done his homework on this one. He'll be teaching at the WMA2001 in NYC this year, so if you want to see the bata firsthand, check him out there. I also teach the bata as part of the AHFAA workshops, so that is another option. Bottom like is it is its own art and not the FMA by another name.

Best,

Pete Kautz

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping that they were what they claimed to be. I will definitely research further.
