Hello. I have picked up what I think are two old knife sheaths simply hooked together, but do not want to sell seperately if they are something else that eludes me, and shoud be kept together as a set or pair. They are about 6 ½ inches long, each. Blade tip slot in each. Looks like nice maple wood. Also, the brass tips are both stamped "1866" (rings around openings are similarly marked with different initials). Could 1866 be the date of manufacturing? Any input appreciated.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

They look like two dangler sheaths. I can't imagine why they would be linked together.

Yep, they are dangler sheaths and hooked together has no significance. The rest of this post is specualtion. They are probably Scandinavian. Good chance the 1866 is put on there to fake the age, maybe not. If you happened to come by them off of eBay then I reaffirm that last statement.

Thank you!! "Dangle sheath" is a new term for yours truly. These are fresh from a local estate sale here in Wisconsin this past weekend, priced low by the family heirs, who obviously had no high regard for them or intention to misrepresent anything. And many, many of the colectibles were Scandinavian - lots of Rosemaling, etc. The stamping looks original even under a loupe; there are no corresponding marks on the wood and the patina is very good all around them. Ironically, I had planned to list on eBay eventually, but is there a better venue? I also rent space in an Antique mall, but have no idea what would be a fair price. That is the beauty of an auction, and I do have perfect feedback on eBay.

Sorry for the lousy picture posting. Here is one of the interior. All are clickable.

Glory, post those up in the Bernard Levine forum on this same page. Those guys might give you a really good critique.

You needed to find the knives the sheaths were fitted to hold that were probably laying around on another table somewhere
