Short story, it was late, 3am, I work graveyard shifts, went to withdrawal some money from the ATM, saw two scumbags looking like they were asking for trouble, wanted some protection. Anyways I bought an extra large cold steel voyager with tanto point, plain edge, was wondering if this would give me any problems while carrying it in california ? I really did not expect it to be this large, its a monster.

I think under state law you'd be okay, but you need to check the local laws where you live.

I view a knife as a tool, not a weapon. If I were ever questioned by the police as to why I was carrying a knife I would say that it was a very useful tool that I regularly used to: peel apples, open packages, break-down cardboard boxes, etc. I'd never tell the police I was carrying a knife for defensive purposes.

Welcome to BF.

Under Calif. state law, you are generally OK (with the usual exceptions for courthouses, schools, etc.). However, LA City/County and other local jurisdictions have more restrictive ordinances. Do you mind identifying your county/city?

And welcome to Bladeforums!

What county are you in? I'm in Fresno. I have navigated the criminal court system a few times for knives.

It's my understanding that you can generally carry that big folder concealed in LA City/County (with the usual exceptions for courthouses, etc.). Because the blade is 3 or more inches, you generally cannot openly carry it in plain view in the City or County of LA (although there are exceptions for legitimate vocational, recreational, and religious uses).

Some LEOs have offered the opinion that to be considered concealed, a folder must be completely concealed inside your pocket. They suggest that clipping the knife in your pocket usually leaves part of it in plain view and may run afoul of the LA City/County rules against exposed carry of a blade of 3 or more inches.

I've never seen or heard of any knife laws out of Glendale so my assumption is that you only have to be concerned with CA State law and LA County law.

Hopefully, you have refined your carry methods sufficiently to keep the knives that you carry well-concealed. :)

Hard lessons learned. Autos only get carried at home. Waved folders everywhere else.
