I don't know much if anything about military style knives and have not seen this one before. It was described as an Imperial Schrade M-75. Can any of the house experts shed a little light on it?

I was looking at this knife earlier today before someone else bought it. Was this made by Schrade? The tang is stamped New York Knife Co.

On the survival/military style/ knife Phil or Codger I am sure can help, I could too but, it is more there forte.

On the other knife now that is an interesting story. The present owner of the New York Knife tang ( IP ) has the right to but this tang marking on a knife he manufactures or has made on contract. The owner of this marking and a bunch of other old stampings is SMKW. I believe these were made by Schrade on contract. When they first came out they confused a few people. Notice the classy shield I believe it is a recycled cut out piece of tin foil from a gum wrapper. Actually aside from that the are kind of cute and it is dandy stag. If you check the bay you will see the same sort of thing appearing for Phoenix and a couple other old companies . It is kind of what is going on with Schrade they are all legit in that the tang is allowed to be used because the name was bought. The one in this ad was made some time ago and at least is american. I really do not know on the Phoenix and the others appearing now. Frankly I had to have one and I do. LT

The M7S was Imperial's answer to the 'Rambo' knife craze of the time when the movie came out. As Imperial was already making M7 bayonets for the military, it was an easy build for them. It was not ever a military issue. The pouches contained a bunch of survival necessities; Compass, fishing line and hooks, needles, a neat flexible saw, an instruction booklet, ect.

The M7S in my collection (Shown below) had belonged to a SWAT officer, and he had added nylon straps to affix it to his lower leg. Knives that are special to me (collectible) are either mint condition in the box, or having been used/modifed by real people.

The guard is interesting and useful: Phillips head tip on one end, a regular screwdriver head on the other. The inner plastic sheath could be pulled out, blade still in it, so you could pound or pull nails with the pommel.

In good condition these sell for up to $50 on ebay. More if in excellent condition, much more with the original box and pouch contents.

Thanks for visiting us!

LT, were you the buyer of this Muskrat yesterday? I had written the seller shortly after he listed the knife to ask what the relationship was to Schrade. His reply was, "This was made by the New York Knife Company, before they became Schrade." I knew that was incorrect and because I didn't know any better, I didn't buy the knife.

Phil, it's no wonder I couldn't find anything on the military Schrade, the seller described it as a Schrade M-75 not a M7S. I did buy the M7S pictured for $52, new, no box, and nothing in the pouches. I see your sheath is camo, so it obviously came both ways. Some of the items you show as in the pouch look generic and I might be able to acquire, but who is the maker of the compass?

Thank you, both. You guys really know your stuff and make this forum a valuable resource.

LT and Phil,

Very informative...thanks for filling us in on these two.

The top one is an m7s. It is an m7 bayonet that schrade turned into a cheap survival knife. I use to have one of these. I think I paid about 24.00 for it in 1988, or 89 in the base exchange at LRAFB?

I lived in the stone house on the hill at the end of the runway where hotshots kicked the afterburners and C-130's began pouring on the juice in the first banking turn. Flew the C-130 sim to Mexico City once and knew some good folks there.
