I've read a lot of threads where folks are going on and on about how much they like a certain knife. I go to find one to possibly buy, and can't. It turns it has been discontinued. Is this a new trend due to the economy or something, or have knife makers always regularly discontinue even popular models? I'm asking about the bigger manufacturers.

Because popular doesn't always equal sales. If a certain design doesn't have sales to sustain production it tends to be dropped from the line for what may be a more profitable design. I think knifemakers have always discontinued models for whatever reason, same as introducing new models. Just a cycle manufacturing industries go through.

But, I can see that this doesn't apply in certain cases. Sprint runs, special editions and other "one-of" types of sales are currently much more popular than they were even a few years ago.

So, maybe. :D

Well, it is that time of year. New models come in, old models are discontinued.

Also, just because a knife is popular on some forum does not neccessarily equate to sales volumes. A classic example being the Benchmade 806 - lots of forum talk, but apparently not much in sales.

kinda odd,the 806 prices are thru the roof.........they never quite took off in sales till they are rip....:)

Don't get that either. I like the 800 series handles, but the 806 blade shape isn't that special in use.

Still, I do own a few and carry an 800hss often as well as an 806 version every so often, too. The 805 is my fave of the axis-lock 800 series.

Back to the original poster, chipm, which knife are you lookin' for?

I ran into a bunch of great knives that are now discontinued now. You can find them, but have to pay the markup price on ebay.

What he said. If they didn't discontinue they wouldn't be able to introduce new models.

I was reading a thread about titanium framelocks, and went to look up a Benchmade Bradley Alias...discontinued, the Kershaw JYD II...discontinued, and a few others I can't remember, all discontinued. With lots of posters talking about them, I was surprised I couldn't find them for sale.

Problem with titanium, is it has been going p in price in recent years. Thus, having a budget titanium folder jst isnt the most profitable way to go. The other problem, is I feel these knives probably dont sell that well to the general public that doesnt see the value of titanium.

Benchmade has just recently discontinued their ENTIRE red class!? i have no idea why they would do such a thing...i'd imagine they sold better....

All of the Chris Reeve 1 piece hollow handled A2 knives are being discontinued after several years. That one really surprised me.

I actually had the opposite problem when I first started really buying knives, not long after I got it, it became discontinued. Lucky on that.

It is annoying to come across a knife on here, one that looks awesome, only to find out its discd.

I'd say more models are going away then in the past, but their are way more models available today then years past.
