Are Tomahawks legal in Canada

I have searched more than I care to say, have called the CBSA 4 times and found the office closed each time, and have generally been more perplexed than anything. I looked up the weapons legislaton and criminal code regarding weapons and have found nothing. So, having said that, I put it to the forum. Does anyone know if 'Hawks are legal to own or have shipped across the border? Does anyone here in Canada own one or bought one across state lines?

Hope you can help me out.

i've seen canadian bladeforum members with cold steel hawks and i've bought hawks from canadian custom knife makers so i would say they are legal

Hey Anthony
Yes they are, I have imported quite a few from the States. I'm just ordering a bunch of Cold Steel hawks as I type this. Never had a problem ,other than one shipment got lost in the post office for two 2 months ;-((

CITIZENQ, I stand corrected:D

It has been maddening to find a straight answer to this question. What really gets me though is why I cant talk to someone at the border 24 hours a day? Our countrys borders never close. Why should the border information service?

Thankd so much for the answer.

Good luck on talking to the border folks unless you want to report a terrorist you can't get through to them. You can't even get to a customs agent any more. However, they are legal so there's no problem, just NEVER call them weapons or you're toast.

They are totally legal.
If you are concerned about the border warriors and wonders in Vancouver has most cold steel tomahawks on their web site.
I've got three my self, my oldest daughter has one.
I've given a couple to my nephews as well.
The only prohibited weapons in Canada are those specifically listed in the Act.
Non-prohibited weapons only become "prohibited" when you intend to use them as a weapon.

Well axes and most knives aren't illegal so I don't see why a tomahawk would be. I'm not saying you should carry one around in a big city though. Definately use it only as a tool and refer to it as a tool, like coyotebc said "Non-prohibited weapons only become "prohibited" when you intend to use them as a weapon". If you were asked about it being in your car then even if you say it's for self defence you'll still get in trouble, if you tell them it's for chopping firewood and you're on your way to the woods then there shouldn't be a problem. You won't get in trouble for owning one, unless of course you're planning on chopping up more than firewood...

If you do get one shipped from out of the country then there may be some customs charges on it (when I buy knives and such from the states I usually get a big customs fee thrown in, I actually factor it into the price when I'm deciding whether to buy something or not), I don't know if they can confiscate it with it being legal and all but who knows with those customs guys... I'd just buy one from within Canada and save yourself any potential hassles.

check out warriors and wonders or lebaron.ca for some hawks. I am buying mine in Canada to save shipping and customs brokerage.

As for legality they are perfectly legal. I wouldn't recommend carrying it to the grocery store, but there is nothing illegal about them.
