i was wondering do you swing a tomahawk like kamas? i know they are different but does the same principle apply when swing them? i know you can't really throw a kama.

You could swing a hawk like a kama, I just beleive that the hawk is much more versatile in the majority of tasks that you are more likely to run into in the woods. You can use the underside of the hawk blade to hook (some places sharpen it for that purpose).

i was just wondering if the same principles apply. like martial arts you can learn how to use the kamas, i was just wondering if you can make the transition to a tomahawk.

thanks for the info.

did not know the underside had a purpose like that.

A Kama is a martial form of a tool ment to reap grain. A tomahawk is a martial form of a tool ment to chop wood and bone. There is no reason why the principles of the Kama in Kobudo can't be translated for use with a hawk. Just remember, a Kama is a slashing & hooking weapon. A hawk will generally be heavier, and it's forte lies in it's chopping power, as well as slashing and hooking. I use an unsharpened Kama in some of my live hawk training.

what do you mean, a kama cannot be thrown? I've done it with some cheapos and it works like a charm!

Ookami

PS just had to bend the blades back into shape, because these were unhardened :barf:

Bugei Trading Co. makes superb kamas. As you practice with them, you begin to realize the tremendous ripping power of the kamas after they have been driven fully into a soft area of the body. You don't get as much ripping depth with a hawk, but instead have more options to attack hard, bony points with the chopping blade or poll. Don't forget to practice less lethal strikes with the handle butt of the kama and the hawk. One of the guys on our team used a handle butt strike to the solar plexus of an Iraqui who stole some commo gear out of our vehicle during a riot in Umm Qasr. He dropped the goods and split. Both weapons will show you a multitude of uses the more you practice with them.
