When viewing older used Schrade-Walden or Schrade Cut. Co. knives, do you get to thinking, "this is getting rather expensive" ?
Do you ever go out specifically to search old barns ?
have you ever offered a seller a nice high price to end the auction early ?
Well, this is not a Schrade knife, but it shows us the relative under appreciation of "Schrade" is to our advantage.

wonder what made it soooo valuable? so far have not seen the price of Schrades esculate that much. in fact the price of LB 7's seems to have flattened or gone down.
just got one of the manufactures knives on there and paid approximately what the same size Schrade would have commanded. so go figure, like i said at the beginning what made that knife sooo valuable, special?

I think it is valuable because it was wanted badly by more than one person on Ebay. I don't think it is a particularly old knife. It has brass pins. I'm not a Case expert by all means, but I do know that some Case knives are super collectable. That is some nice stag. I think I'll toss this over to Levine and see what comes up.

A Case Brothers knife in that condition, with Stag handles which look fantastic for the age!! Case Bros date between 1900 and 1915. Not many knives around in that condition today I'm sure. I've seen later Case knives go for far more than this knife realized.

Early stag Case knives bring a huge premium.
The blades are very full on that auction knife, and the stag appears very good. If I still collected Case, I would pay that price. Try and find that big stockman for sale in that condition!! Most have been buffed to oblivion, nice and shinney (sic), and I fear for that one. I hope the purchaser doesn't erase its history!!

Early Schrades are not as expensive as early Case knives, and that is one of the reasons I switched to them. I think the quality is on a par, so it's all ruled by demand, IMO.

Thanks Rusty & Charlie. your posts plus the same thread in BRL has set me straight as to the relevance and value of this knife. so far i can't imagine spending that much for a vintage knife. to date my max is about $105 for a Schrade-Walden 166.
hope i never graduate to the 'super collectibles' or i will be in real deep do-do.

Holy sh*t!!! That's a lot of coin!!! I read something Levine mentioned bout another auction (I took your advice, Roland and have been browsing his stuff for my "University" education) that I totally agree with and I will paraphrase his point and mine. When you have more money than you could ever spend the value of the knife loses all importance and significance. "I want that" is how some people think about knives and even multi-million dollar homes. I think 2 people at least with large cash wanted that knife. Is it worth that? It was to them. Are Schrade's relatively inexpensive? I would say yes and that's great for us. What's also great is that some of them surface rarely enough that you may indeed attract a "whale" to the bidding. It's all about timing and luck. When a multi-billionaire (for example) drops a million bucks down on the craps table in one night was it worth it? It was to him. Casino owners know this. I think the term they use: "whale" can apply to some knife collectors too. As far as profiting on eBay and the like I think if you offer up old quality knives at outrageous prices and are willing to wait for the "whale" to see it you can sometimes sell it for 10x what you bought it for. Buy low, sell high. I think Schrade is an area where you can do both if you are shrewd and patient. I spent $189.00USD on my most expensive Schrade (DU LB-7) but I was thinking only "I want that!" If it had been $250.00 I still would have bought it. Generally I like to shop for the "deals" only.

Bought an 885UH on that famous auction site 1 year before Schrade locked the doors, that's almost 1 year to the day. $12. 1 year after they locked the doors? Well we all know what happened. Schrade was far and away my fav cutlery company till they closed, then it became some kind of cult-no fun anymore and the VALUE was gone. Value= bang for your buck. Love the brand can't pay the current prices.
