Are you going to buy a Lone Wolf Loveless?

Yea, I have been thinking about it. They look very nice, but pricey at $300-. I like the fixed semi-skinner. I was hoping to see one first. I wonder if the Micarta is really that green. Most of the "green" Micarta I have seen on Loveless knockoffs was more brown than green.

Anyway I like the simple, utility look of these blades.
Maybe after the holidays.

Cheers,
Hal

I kind of wonder what semi-custom means. Maybe a knife made by the original maker, but with the use of helpers or CNC machines? Does Bob Loveless actually have a hand in making these knives? I really doubt that these are more than production/collaboration knives, albeit very high quality ones.

Both the Semi-Skinner and Classic Utility look really good, but I wonder if I can't get just as good or maybe even better true custom knives for that kind of money?

Gerber did a collaboration with the classic Loveless hunter last year. Made in Italy, it sported green canvas micarta, red spacers, tapered tang, and an INTEGRAL construction of forged 440 steel. This is a costly step in its construction process. If the soon to be available Lone Wolf models, which have a strikingly similar appearance to that of the Gerber collaboration, are made with integral construction then the retail price would reflect that. This alone would appeal to the collector. Especially if an original handmade Loveless is out of reach. But personally, I prefer a good using blade without the bells and whistles. I' d go with a custom maker for a similar price range.

Edited for correct company name. My mistake!

JFYI, you might want to take a very close look at the current Beretta/ Loveless collaborations. They are modeled in the same tradition as the classic drop point hunter.

Beautiful quince burl handles that are highly contoured and rounded properly, highly polished ATS34, tapered tang, nickle silver bolster and bolts. Made in SEKI Japan. MSRP at about $250

Injection molded FRN handleds with checkering. :) Magnet test indicates it has a near full stick tang and is visible at the thong hole. Same highly contoured feel. AUS8 made in Seki- Japan. A bargain at a MSRP of $66!

The Lone Wolf Loveless knives look outstanding, to say the least. They're just too pricey for me though.

I’ve been intrigued by the folders, and the Loveless folders in particular. And the newly listed “City Knife” at an msrp (what I hope is that as with all the other knives that I've bought is the actual price is lower than msrp) of $150 doesn’t seem too outrageous. But what is LV-03 high-carbon stainless steel? And why on the Paul folders would they use “420 High-Carbon stainless steel” on a semi-custom. When I hear about a 420 blade I start thinking cheap. And is 420 a high carbon stainless steel?

Lone Wolf LV-03

C-0.95
Cr-13.5
Mn-0.65

This is what they sent me when I asked about their alloys. This one doesn't impress me much. For their price, I think I can get a better alloy. The knives are nice looking though. The L-4 has the following components according to them.
C-0.90
Cr-18.0
Mn-0.7
Mo-1.15
V-0.10

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Walt, I was starting to wonder when I read "a high carbon stainless steel". Isn't that an oxymoron? It sounds a little too much like marketing/advertisement hype to make me feel comfortable. Why not use known steel? Even something as common as ats-34 (which I think is an excellent steel even if it is common) would have given me more confidence in the knives. Although to be fair some of the other knives that are not released yet have s30v listed, just not the ones that really catch my eye.

Logan:

any steel with 0.5 % and above Carbon is "High Carbon" steel. Add 13.5 % Chromimum and Shazam! you have high carbon stainless steel.

all the best,

A. G.
