Aren't you glad?

There is no need for me to detail the incident that prompted this post, lets just say it hurt a little. So, while I am standing there bleading, I think "Well, if you are a knife person, getting cut is just kind of a right of passage I guess." Then I thought "Man, am I glad the same principle doesn't transfer to us gun people!"

Aren't you?

LMAO!!!!

Scott, you obviously have never gotten your thumb smashed by the bolt of an M-1 Garand.
Now THAT is a Rite of Passage.
:D

Hope you didn't cut yourself too badly.

Scott: I don't think you can call yourself a knife nut without bearing the scars!

KC: A very good buddy of mine has an M-1 in his inventory. Its a blast to play with on the range! When I've got it on target, I hold it with a sentimental sense of reverence...The way I look at it, this rifle helped my grandfather win the free world!

Every Red Blooded American Male should own at least on M1 Garand (even though John Garand was technically a Canadian).

I own two currently (one is a smokin' .308 Tanker I will NEVER part with), but am always on the look out for another.

Yes, I've had "M1 Thumb"

Question for the Garand guys:
What is the best way/type to purchase? Are the all NOS, refurbs, or new manufacturer?

I'm just glad I've still got all my fingers:(

OT/M1
The refurbs I've seen were junk. I'd stick with a new or used Springfield Armory Garand. New ones retail around $1200, I think, and IIRC there're options like stainless match barrels, etc. (could be wrong, I know that's true of the M1A).

Watch the Gun Shows and dealers.

I was in Montana on business (believe it or not) and happened to see signs for a Gun Show the day before I left. "Largest Gun Show in Montana!" it said. Turns out it was twelve tables in an Eagles Lodge. On the last table was a .308 Tanker at a price I couldn't pass up. (Saw a 30-06 Tanker at a local Gun Show last weekend for $795)

The Second one is a "Blue Sky" re-import with a shot barrel I picked up (with minor haggling) for $250. A new barrel and replacing a cracked top hand guard and it's literally good as new.

Keep your eyes peeled and you'll find someone selling on at a resonable price.

John,

I take from your postive response, you've never had a problem with the .308? Is your gun a modified reciever, or is it a new short reciever?

Did you have to modifiy the clips at all?

Thanks for your comments,

-Seth

Absolutely, positively, without a doubt, it's a positive responce. :D I love my Tanker.

It's a standard reciever. Matter of fact, it was originally a "Gas Trap" Garand and has a serial number under 50,000.

Basically, there is a spacer inside the reciever that keeps you from attempting to loading 30-06 ammunition. The rifle will work fine without the spacer and God knows that you'll never get 30-06 to chamber in a .308 barrel. I guess it's a piece of mind thing. You use standard clips.

While mine is a .308 barrel, I believe it was the Navy that had adaptors made to convert 30-06 barreled Garands to .308. While they can be a pain, the adaptors are out there.

I just can into an ad in Shotgun News that showed Smith Enterprises is doing .308 and 30-06 Tanker conversions. Plus they can modify the reciever to accept M14 mags. :D Hmmmmmm

I saw a BM62 at the same show Tom. The guy wanted $2K with one Beretta mag. Hadn't seen one of those in many years.

BM59 w/Folder stock

The BM59/BM62 would be a damn near perfect rifle if it took the more common M14 mag.

Doesnt that guy on the right look a lot like John????????? :p

LOL That's been pointed out before actually, but I have a cuter nose. :D

Aaahhh...The Beretta BM-59, the Rifle Mel Tappan [RIP] loved...I actually held one a couple of years ago and it was indeed around 2Gs. They had an H&K M91 in there as well, MINT. [Ooooh-Ahhhh] which was about 3.5G. G-3/3-G MooHooHwahaha, Lovely!

Something is the matter, however, my M-1 has "Super-90" behind it, WTF-Over? Ha!

Rearic: Been a long time brother. I just noticed your Avatar, very funny! :D

Had two bm 59s.......too much clutter....all that junk.....
the 62 is a far superior weapon.....
BTW- If ANYONE spots any mags for these things (they look VERY similar to M1A mags and say BM59 on the bottom) PLEASE let me know, I have been looking for some more for years......needless to say there are not a zillion in Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!!
and yes....you nose is a lot cuter John!
