Areo Vest

I love the line about not wearing it near power lines and in electrical storms. If you inflate it with helium, will you float?

The way I figure is it couldn't hurt to toss one in a PSK. I have been on hunting blinds where it got a lot colder than expeected. Something like this could be helpful. If I see one in the local sporting goods store, I'll buy it and give it a try.

BMW Makes something along a similar concept for motorcycling but theirs is not disposable. I have been wondering how effective it is.

if you get one let us know how it works. What was the price by the way?

$13.95-$14.95 depending on the vendor. They look a little gimmicky. Unless I see one on sale, I'll stick with a space blanket and regular clothing.

Something I would rather spend the money on is the Adventure Medical bivy bags. One is like a space blanket, but in bag form: http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/kit_detail.asp?series=1000&seriesNav=&kit=4&kitNO=0140-0138

The other is a tougher, thicker material: http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/kit_detail.asp?series=1000&seriesNav=&kit=3&kitNO=0140-0223

I carry the second one on day hikes, where I am not carrying a sleeping bag or shelter. Team one up with a poncho, a little line, and some leaf litter or evergreen boughs for ground insulation and you can make it through a night in nasty weather.

Gimmicky - why a vest shap and not a jacket? A vest might keep the body core temp a little longer, but it won't help so much if you are on your way to hypothermia. Also provides minimal wind and rain protection except on the vest. I 2nd Dale and would feel better with a space blanket.

Even a space blanket is a "better than nothing at all" proposition. Go out on a cold rainy night an sit in the back yard with one for protection. There's a big difference between saving your life and comfortable.

The real weakness in the vest is sealing around the armpits and neck. Again, it's better than nothing at all. These products are great for compact storage in aircraft, disaster kits, etc.

When I'm hiking, I layer with polyester base layer, microfleece intermediate layer (Polarguard Power Ptretch), polyfil vest (Patagonia Micro Puff) and a wind shirt (Golite). In colder weather I add more layers for my legs and more loft for the top, using a polyfill pullover jacket, heavier boots and socks, goves, etc. Rain gear is a poncho or light jacket and pants (Marmot Precip). Any survival kit back-ups are aimed at something happening to my clothing like fire, theft, animal damage, stream crossing dunking, etc, but the bivies or a garbage sack are about it.
