I love the mad maxx II knife, but the prices on darrel ralph's site are too high for my budget. Luckily, they made the Camilius Mad maxx 5.5 stiletto, which is an afforadble version, except they just happend to pick the ugliest color possible for the handle.

Why can't they just make an affordable version that looks like this http://www.darrelralph.com/ddr_knives_tactfolder_mm5.5IIrc.htm instead of freakin baby blue metallic? :(

Camillus is coming out with the all black DLC coated blade and handle Mad maxx and dominator.

I suppose you could have the handles blasted if you don't like the ano...

I like the blue:p

I like the blue handles, too. The Cuda Maxx is a great buy; you get a LOT of bang for your buck.

what's the timeframe on that? do you know when it's supposed to come out?

I will see what I can find out. It shouldn't be too long. Once Camillus has all the pieces parts ready, then they ship to DLC for coating. That will probably take the longest. It's not as if Camillus is bringing out a new design. That can take a long time.

yeah, that's what i was thinking. it looks to me like all that changes between the different mad maxx II styles is the handle, which i would think doesn't take very long to change

The ONLY thing stopping me from 4" semi-spear DDR Maxx is the price. Like you say, it's just out of my league. It is however, the folding knife I want most in all the world. It's perfect. I think it's a genius design and is minimalist and very functional. It also fits my hand extremely well. If DDR had one at blade this year, I might have lost control and put it on the charge card but that would have been really stupid of me. Fortunately, DDR had left the 4" spear point back at the workshop so I was spared the temptation. I, and others, have pushed for Camillus to do a 4" version of the Maxx but it just isn't going to happen. Maybe someday if I inherit money or win the lottery... :(

The major change between the Maxx and Maxx II is the rounding of the handle. There are other subtle changes that you can't see right away. They do make for a serious improvement to the Maxx. I wasn't aware Camillus was going to pick up the changes for their Maxx's.

The DLC Cuda Maxx's should be ready sometime in August. I understand, to help out with this, Darrel is making the screw sheet. This is a large metal sheet that is drilled and tapped for the screws used in the knife. Lot's of holes! Then screws are put into sheet and coated.

how about the aftermath? under 300, d2 blade, i would get it cept its too big for a edc, for me.

Bardock - There is always the AXD, which I have heard has been picked up by someone for production. It should be well within most people's budget. I can't say who will be making it at this time.;)

Dirk, are all Cuda Maxx's going to be improved per the Maxx II?

Hey! That's great news about the AXD!!!! Now, hopefully, they'll put the 4" blade on it and perhaps even the spearpoint blade on it. The bowie would be OK, just not the dagger. :D I wonder about when they'll hit the market?

Darrell is a custom maker(and mastersmith) with alot of years invested and alot of money in equipment. Is it really fair to criticize his prices for his customs here when alot of other makers charge as much or more?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing his prices at all. It's just REALLY disappointing to find a well crafted tool whose design perfectly fits your needs and wants, only it's beyond your budget... really disappointing. I'm not saying it's not worth it, just that I can't afford to drop 550+ dollars on a knife. I can't afford to drop 550+ dollars on a car repair, but if I have to do that, I'll do it on a charge card so I can continue to go to work every day to earn money for food clothing and shelter for my family. I can't run the same justification for a knife, no matter how much I might want it. I'll just continue to wait here near the bottom of the food chain and wait until one the wealthier fish tires of their toy and sells it at a much reduced price. Then, with luck, I'll scramble to the front of the feeding frenzy. :D

Nobody, that I can understand. Before internet forums, I attended the NY Custom knife show from about 1978 or 79 every year till now. Yet I didnt buy my first handmade knife until 1991 for the same reasons.
He does make some awesome stuff, doesnt he?

As I understand it at this point, the Cuda Maxx will retain it's current specs. They will just be receiving the DLC coating. I'll try to verify that information as well.

Hey Lifter, Darrel needs little criticism from time to time. I mean, we don't call him the Great Big Head for nothing! Darn it! I let that little secret out! Man am in for it now!

yep, they are high (the prices) but darrel does some of the best fit/finish i have seen, i have a 4" talonite twotone spearpoint maxx w/carbon fibre handles and a 5.5" D2 maxx, they both are really well made/fitted/finished, outstanding work, and comparable to others prices imho,

the cammilus maxx is an excellent accurate rendition of the ralph maxx, wayyy closer than i expected, dimensions are almost exactly the same, i carry the cammilus version when i wanna carry a 5.5" knife, strangly enough i have never packed the 4" version, nice knife though.

i'm not criticizing him. i'm praising his knives but at the same time wishing they were cheaper. i really want a custom maxx, but since us college student's are broke as crap and can't afford to spend $600 on a knife, yeah i'm SOL.
