I will be hosting a Hammer In Feb. 13-14 at our shop in Casa Grande, Az. I'm still working out the details transitioning from a one day damascus/forging class to an actual "Hammer In". I don't have a full list of instructors and classes since I just settled on the date, but will make some more formal posts since I'm new to starting threads.

Sounds good Travis... just a hop, skip and jump from my place. :)

Keep us posted.

Is that Sunday/Monday or the weekend? I'll be in Casa Grande on the 14th for sure soaking up the arizona sun. I hope.

Saturday and Sunday (13-14) will be the classes. Friday will be setup, tinker and BS. So far I think Tim Hancock will be teaching damascus and blade grinding. I will try to post more as I figure it out and as more makers commit. Either way should be a good time. I'm sure ther will be some after hours shop shenanigans too.

The reason I asked is my 2011 calender says the 12/13th is the weekend. Lincoln's birthday is the 12th.

Travis,
Do you realize that Feb 14 is Valentines Day? I need to keep peace at home, that would be a tough sell to be gone.

I'm definitely in Travis--after being there last year I wouldn't miss it. I'm hoping someone can give me the magic touch on being able to grind a halfway decent blade!

Wow had no idea there were that many AZ makers on this Forum.
Will the Hammer In include any finishing Classes? Or maybe Guard fitting???
Not a Smith but us Stock removal guys could always use a little help...

Sorry for those whom missing Valentine's day may cause inconvenience, but the weekend seems to work well otherwise. I'm almost certain that blade finishing will be worked into the blade grinding even if it's a continuation. I think the guard fitting is also a good class and had talked to Tim about that. Not to speak for anyone but a conversation with Mike Quesenberry mentioned guard fitting. So far I think starting with forging damascus, blade forging, blade grinding/finishing, guard and handle fitting, is a good direction. As I talk to more people and post it on my website, I will come up with a more detailed schedule.

Also I guess I got days slightly confused....... Saturday Feb 12, and Sunday Feb 13, Friday will be setup. Ive been a bachelor a long time, but it looks like Valentine's Day is Monday.

Travis, looking forward to coming down to the warm weather. We already have at least a couple of feet snow and I'm sure more to come. I'll be sick of the stuff by February. I'd be happy to share my guard fitting techniques and whatever you think the guys would be interested in. If it were up to me, it would be Tim teaching all weekend long:). Looking forward to the Shenanigans.

Grandkids live in Mesa, would love to come the hammer-in and see them on the way. Count me in.

Thanks
Allen:)

Tavis,
I'll be coming from Flagstaff. Is there any place to stay down there that won't bust the bank?

Thanks

Hotels should be real reasonable since my brother will have a deal set the week before to acommodate my family's Gourd Festival the weekend before.

As far as classes its lookin like Tim Hancock will be forging damascus and probably a blade, and then grind it. Mike Quesenberry will do guard fitting and maybe carry into handle fitting/shaping. Somewhere in ther a blade or two will get hardened, one to do a hand finish and another to Rockwell test and ultimately put through some cutting tests until it gets bent till it breaks to examine grain structure. I think there will also be a class on working with titanium. I will work on my organization for classes but I think it'll be a pretty full weekend.

Travis,
This is great. I've been looking for a knife related hammer-in close to home. I would be very happy to be there. Please keep me in informed of the details so I can be sure to get my hotel reservations early. Count me in
Thanks very much
