Well it was a long drive from Dallas to Little Rock for the show but well worth the effort. I went for the second day of a two day event so the biggest names were pretty well sold out and had only pictures of their work available. Some of the makers said day one had a ton of traffic. From 3-5K was one makers estimate. There were a bunch of wonderful folks at the show and while I did't get to chat with all of them the ones I did were enough.

Just to start it off, I have to tell you about the best deal of the show. I took my 6 year old son with me courtesy of free passes from Larry Connely at Knife Art. (Big thanks Larry!) My son was a great sport, and as always very polite. When we went to the Burr Oak table we were looking at some of their fixed blades and chatting with the maker and the maker(I will need to edit this when I remember his name) talked with my son and asked him if he wanted to collect knives like his dad. My son said yes but he didn't have any knives yet. Well I'll be damned if this gentelman didn't reach under the table and pull out a little fixed blade in a dangler sheath and hold it out. He said, here is your first knife for your collection. It was just the right size for a kid and as pretty as could be. I just gaped while my son reached across and accepted it. (I made him give a penny back for luck.) Not often do you run across folks that do a good turn like that.

I finally got the knife off his waistband this morning before he left for school. (I would love it if he could have taken it in to show off but you know the way things are...)

Anyway, a big thanks is in order from myself and my son to Burr Oak knives for their act of kindness.

I met Raker at his table and had a chance to look at his wares. You can tell he puts alot of effort into his work. Met Mr. Fisk o' so briefly. Met Les's partner at the LDC table and they had an extensive array of very nice knives out. Saw Gene Osborne again and am still amazed at the array of knives he comes up with. He must have had a hundred knives and no two were the same. There was man named Fitch there with absolutly fantastic blades, he had one that I wanted to pick up that was a trade in from a customer with wonderful stag handles an about a 6" blade and tooled leather sheath for 150$ It looked like a real steal.

I must have made notes on about 50 makers and now have a longer list of must haves than ever.... What a fun show.

I will post more on makers I met when I get my notes together.

Isn't Burr Oak Knives Mark Nevling?

Great guy. Very fresh ideas.

Thank you Brian. Yes it was Mark Nevling. He had some very nice knives at good prices. It was more his graciousness than anything else that impressed me.

Oh' I just remembered I also met Mr. Griffith and checked out his work. Very slim and well finished. Extremely usable looking a much smaller overall package that you might expect from pictures. A much younger guy than you might expect as well.

No beanie babies at the show either. A great step up from the local gun and knife shows.

The Arkansas Knifemakers Association board of directors has worked very hard to keep this show as a real custom knife show. Too many of the once top notch shows have degenerated into a swap meet for rusty $35 factory rejects. It is refreshing to attend a first class show for a change. By the way I share a shop and daughter (his wife) with big John Fitch. He not only makes fine big knives but is also a heck of a nice guy. He is at the ABS Blade School this week as an assistant instructor with Jay Hendrickson. It is a two week basic forgeing course. I'll be taking the Rick Dunkerly damascus class the first week of March. If any of you guys are looking fo a good blade school, look no further, it's one of the best.
