I have a new Arkansas stone that came in a box entitled the cutters edge. I wouldn't have gotten it but i i got it with another stone for 15 dollars. The Arkansas stone is a little of 12 inches long and is semi worn. How can i refinish or make sure this stone is flat? i was thinking about taping some 220 grit paper to my granite counter top and use that against the stone. Is that the right grit for sandpaper or should it be higher?

How much is semi-worn ? Can you see a dish on the surface ? 220 grit AO sandpaper should do it . What is the brand name and what is the color ? DM

The brand name is the cutters edge. I dont know anything about it and a google search yielded nothing. the wooden box may be made of ceder but im not sure. it is grayish white except for the center of the stone that has gray streaks. i know it was used for sharpening chisels before. i cannot see any sign of it not being flat but i would like to resurface it and make it look new before i use it.

You will most not be able to hold a perfect edge (I only sharpen on stones and all my edges are a little convex), so any tiny deviation from planar should not affect you. I have refinished some of my coarse stones on a cinderblock with sand as the abrasive medium. Works very well for my aluminum oxide and silicon carbide stones, both of which are harder than Arkansas (bonded or real) stone.

A Cutter Edge brand I've not heard of but an 11.5" stone is a nice size and it could be a hard . DM
