Arkansas stone lube

When im using my stone i use a mix of REM oil and water. i was wondering what you guys use as lube on your stones. Also I have never acutally done any matinence to my stone. Ive heard things about making sure your stone is flat and true. How would i go about doing that? Thanks

Nathan's honing oil or just water. The stuff that comes with lansky kits, depends on the quality of the stones if good stones I'd stick with water.Use a stone grit lower then the stone you want to flatten to level it . More info if you posted in the link above .

You can also lap your stone on a glass plate with some silicon carbide, this is how I keep all of my waterstones flat.

Simple Green instead of lube/oil

Honing oil that is used with Arkansas stones (for instance Smith's brand found at big orange) is usually nothing more than mineral oil so I just buy a bottle of mineral oil from the drug store.
