If I'm just sharpening a couple pocket knives and folders everyday, how long would it usually take for them to start dishing? Is it easy to flatten them?

Are they soft or hard Arkansas stones? I have been using Arkansas stones for many years and have never had to flatten them, but I am likely to use a fine India first. I once saw a hard black stone that was dished, but it was used by a violin maker, and used all day long. Most people won't sharpen enough to dish a hard Arkansas stone.

Was thinking of buying a set. Soft, Hard, and Hard black.

I really don't do heavy sharpening. Just try to keep my folders and pocket knives sharp.

Easier to just get a Norton India Stone (Combination Bench Stone) and use a bit of oil or WD-40 as a lubricant. These are 1x2x8" and come in coarse and fine sides. Cost should be under $20.

I have a white hard Arkansas stone I was issued in the USAF in the mid 60s and it is slightly cupped on the corners after 48 years of use but only noticeable when its sitting on my black puter desktop with a lot of contrast between the two. The flats show no wear at all using a machinists 6" ruler. The knife edges on the other hand do show evidence of a lot of sharpening LOL the stone is 4/10"X 3.3" IMO it would cost more to have it squared up than to buy a new stone.
