I have been curious about arkansas stones lately, im trying to find out how they perform vs other stones like regular whetstones, diamond and ceramic and if they have any properties those other types of stones dont have, but its difficult to find the info im looking for online. I ordered some stuff for my lansky today and threw in a dans soft arkansas pocket stone since it was on a really cheap "special" deal, I thought it would be fun to test out and use for simple touch ups.

My generally technically uninformed opinion on Arkansas stones is this, in all the grades across the board, Arkansas stones don't cut that much compared to other stones. The soft Arkansas cuts reasonably well, but the transluscent and black Arkansas make great polishing stones IMO, and not so much as cutting stones. A good range of Arkansas stones are pretty good for sharpening, but if you need to move a lot of metal, I would start with a Norton or other synthetic stone or a coarse or medium diamond. Just IMO FWIW

Yes from Fish ^. A natural stone doesn't cut fast like a man made stone. The Arkansas Washita stone is the most coarse grade on up to the Black as the finest. One can improve their cutting abilities by using diamond slurry on the stone. But starting with a more coarse grit man made works better. This topic comes up often here. There should be pages on this subject.? Have you tried the search feature? DM
