Arkansas stones.

What are you trying to sharpen and where? What do you use the knife for and how often will you need to sharpen it?

Jimdbird,HandAmerica offers natural Arkansas stones in big sizes.I bought one that is 12'' long,4'' wide, and 2'' thick. It comes with a cedar box with a smooth piece of leather glued to the top and a bottle of green chrome oxide powder to use on the leather. The only gripe I have is that one side of the stone has marks left from the saw in a small area.I like natural stones a lot,and even though I use DMT diamonds for most sharpening these days,I still buy Arkansas stones when I run across one that I like.I also like Norton fine India stones and have several different sizes, from the little pocket ones,to the bench sizes.

Thanks Guys,

I plan to sharpen kitchen knives on a part time basis, so I’ll be adding the Arkansas stones, as an option to the Edge Pro.

I’m leaning towards getting the Hall’s stones.

Next on my list, is to come up to speed, on stropping....any pointers on where to read up on it would be appreciated.

@ Willis,

Does HandAmerica have a web site other then this one? There doesn't seem to be much on that site.

Speaking as the owner and previous user of several varieties and sizes of Arkansas stones (high-end), if my situation were as you describe I would go for the Sharpmaker over any stones.

HandAmerican has largely closed its doors. Keith had some terrific products and last time I checked you could still get some of the items as the HandAmerican site directed.

You can't go wrong with a good Arkansas stone. Both are reputable dealers. You can't beat an Arkansas stone for smoothness and consistancy, except for maybe Spyderco's alumina ceramic stones.

jimdbird, when I ordered my stone in 2003 they had a full website iirc.My stone had saw marks on one side of it that you could see and feel.I probably should have sent it back but was working out of town that summer wiring a super wal mart in Radcliffe Ky and was so busy with work that I never got to it.Maybe others had similar experiences with them, and thats why they went out of business?

I ordered a Norton Tri Stone IM 313 from “The Best Things”. The stones are Medium Crystolon, Fine India, and Hard Translucent White Arkansas. I also added a Coarse Crystolon, to the order.

Now I just have to learn to use them.:)

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Cheers,
Jim
