This Arkansas company is a good place to get info
on this type of natural whetstone.

Not sure if their prices are good or not.

I bought several seemingly nice Ark.whetstones
in Missouri last week at a Chicago Cutlery factory outlet
for $6 each (1-1/2"x6"x1/2").
They had some for twice the price.

I have two of the Dans stones, a true hard and a hard select. The hard select is 10X3 and a good finish stone for large blades. The hard select is somewhat finer than a Norton soft Arkansas stone, which makes it pretty fine. The true hard is close to an old Norton Black Hard that I have, but not quite as fine. Both stones do what they are supposed to do - provide a finished edge. The black hard is a little finer than a translucent stone. I have a cheaper hard black from Halls. It is not the same quality as the Dans stones. The finish is not as good, and the texture is not as uniform.

The Dans stones are a decent value. Prices are not cheap, but good stones are worth it. They are much less than Norton stones. They run "specials," but I paid full price for mine.
