Ok guys, here is a semi on-topic, silly question:

I was trying to sharpen the knives I have, they are deadly-sharp as they have to be; but now no hair left on my left arm  :p . It looks funny and here summer season starts soon, this will look bad on the beach (you know what I mean ;) ). What should I do now(I learned not to shave the arm, thanks :grumpy: ), maybe the right arm has to be shaven I dont know? What do you do?

Ha Ha :D this is so true. I remember back in 1998 when I had to have surgery on my arm. While I was waiting to go into the operating room the nurse that was taking my blood pressure asked if I was a welder because there was no hair on my right arm (I'm a southpaw). My wife pipes up and says "No, he checks the sharpness of his knives by shaving his arm  "
Now I sliver newspaper to check it.

After you have shaved hair, cut paper, ect, place the edge at about 25-45 degrees against your fingernail, a sharp blade will will instantly grip the nail without slipping. After a while, you will be able to gauge the sharpness by just touching your fingernail and varying the angle. At times, I still can't resist just watching the hair pop off my arm!

Take up forging. You'll singe most of the hair off long before you get around to sharpening the blade.

I enjoy forging for about 2 and a half years, I never wore a tshirt in front of the forge for this reason, especially dont by the charcoal forge if you dont want some small points on your skin.

Hey I have a cat but the cat bite marks wont look better than those bald arms I guess :D .

When the ladies at the beach ask why there's no hair on your arm, tell them you make knives. Making knives is cool and will get you women, right?
But seriously, I've got the bare patches, too, and I wear them like a badge of honor. Most of my customers have a couple, themselves, because they can't get over how sharp a real knife is.
David Boye talks about this in his book. He says that cutting leather is a good way to guage knife sharpness and I believe him. There are shredded scraps of leather all over my appartment... Never going to stop shaving my arms.

Ya I'm exactly the same way no hair on my left arm. I try to limit how much I shave off on each arm so that I still have some left for other knives! I know "what the hell is that" but that's what I do.

I also test with paper but I still end up testing first on arm hair. My left arm right now looks like I have some type of leprosy, splotches of hair here and there but not much. By the time Blade rolls around I'll have a completely bald left arm.

If you do happen to run out of hair on your arms, you could always opt to test on leg and chest hair. I did that last year before vacation, when I first got into making knives and refurbished and sharpened an old kitchen set we had.

Of course, we went to the beach. My sister was embarassed and made me get rid of all the hair so I'd be even. Hehe.

When you go to the beach, stick a bowie knife in the waistband of your suit.It won't stop the people from looking at your hairless arm,but it will stiop them from laughing at you.

Lol, it is doable ! Did you do it actually? That would cause some problems with cops i guess. Here in my country carrying a knife longer than about 3" requires some special allowance (hunter license etc.). BTW, this is the most probable reason why the hunters-camp knives are sold few. People dont buy cutlery they wont able to carry. I think small EDC type and folders are popular here. But without a mill I wont be able to try to make any folders i presume.

I will shave the right arm next week (lots of projects hanging in my mind, all needs sharpening :D ). It'll equalize the hair balance i hope ;) ...

Best wishes
Emre
