Armed and dangerous: my female co-workers

I have three female co-workers, late 30's to early 40's in age, who saw me looking at some knives on the net during break one day. They became very interested so I showed them a picture of a Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion I had just purchased for my wife. They really thought that was very cool so the next day I brought it in to show them. They loved it! Especially when I show them how it opens almost like a switch blade. Two of them asked me if I would order one for them so I got on the net, had them pick out a color and told them that I would order as soon as the third one picked out a knife she liked because, even though she thought the Scallion was pretty cool, she wanted to check out some others. (I had also showed them my Junglee Shogun and she liked the Tanto blade a lot). I ended up ordering her a Columbia River M16-00K which has a black blade and handle. When I received the knives I took them in to work and told them they were here you would have thought it was Christmas they were so excited. Kinda scary. Break time came and we all went out a picnic table no one ever uses and I passed out the knives. I don't think they would have been any happier if I had just handed out diamond earrings.
That was a year ago and they still carry them every day in their purses.
I just thought I would share this story because one, they didn't think I was weird for having such an interest and love of knives, and two, well hell, their enthusiasim surprised me. Still does. When I look at knives on my break they will still come over,if they notice, to check them out.
I feel sorry for any one who tries to mess with them especially if they are all out together!

I think three women, as enthusiastic about serious knives as these are, know very well how to cut things.

In my experience, lots of women are fine with knives. The problems seem to come from a lack of confidence ("oh, well I trust _you_ to use one, but I'd probably cut myself"), "knife guys" projecting an image that makes them uncomfortable (women are _really_ sensitive about your attitude--if you're thinking "oh my God, this chick's checking out my knife; whaddoIdo?", trust me, she can feel the pressure), and the generally condescending attitude they get from the majority of gung-ho knife guys and knife store clerks (and hell, the knife companies, too; Spyderco, my favorite knife company in the world, has a simple strategy for marketing to women: make the handles _pink_! ).

Sure, there're millions of skittish, hysterical women who assume you're gonna flay their babies as soon as you draw a knife from your pocket, but _most_ of the women I know are either interested in, or at least indifferent to knives. Just use your knives skillfully and responsibly, and practice the fine art of not-weirding-women-out. :D

(I should mention that my comments about weirding out and condescending toward knife-friendly women don't apply to the forumites I've met; the NJKCA members were as polite as can be to the girls I brought to the last meeting. The result: they wanna come back this month and bring their _own_ knives. )

AS a knife friendly, knife carrying, knife buying female....I am happy to see a thread like this one!
I love my black handled spyderco delica and my benchmade griptillian and my kershaw chive. I can't leave my house without SOMETHNG in my pocket.
I know a few others like me (female and knife wielding) and we DO get looked at funny sometimes by both men and women when the knives come out for use. We DO talk about how frustrating it is to carry a knife while wearing a dress and what good is it in your purse.
I love to share the story of me, at my brothers wedding. I wore a cute dress, and clipped my chive right into the V of my cleavage. It was more for attitude and to prove it could be done then for usage. My mom thought it was part of the dress design and only a few people caught on to what the clip was there for. I walked around with a grin! I kept thinking of the gun owners saying about prying it from a cold dead hand...well, I thought, they can dress me up, but they can't take my knife away!!!
Some women are very scared of pocket knives, and then again, so are some men. I know when I pulled my random leek out and showed it to a friend of my brothers he took it from me, promptly nicked himself, turned white and then toppled over. All 6ft 3 and 280 lbs of him. It was like a tree fell. I don't think it was the knife as much as the sight of his own blood....but he had to work hard to get past those jokes.
I love the fact that there are knives with handles of other colors then black. Nothing against black but I am not going where I need to be stealthy. I love my blue benchmade and my barbie doll pink swiss army classic. They are great!
I love all my knives and will carry one for as long as I possibly can, there is always something it can be used for and I just feel naked without one.

Heh. One of the reasons Danielle loves her Spyderco Cricket so much is that it can ride comfortably on the left cup of her bra. It lets her carry conveniently even when she's wearing clothing that's designed to make her helpless. :D

One of the many reasons I like small knives is they're easy to hide where people might not think to look for them. That's certainly one of the reasons I like my little fixed blade I posted in the small knives thread. Still not saying where I carry that, though. :)

The day I meet anyone else--male or female--that likes knives as much as I do, I think I'll pass out like the guy betts described.

LOL oh that makes me chuckle....and I remember the time I was carrying a Delica, opened a box at work and got a guy all excited seeing it. We started talking and he was just babbling almost. Just because I knew Soooo much about knives and was not scared of them like ALL the other females he had met. He told me I was the perfect woman for him. He was in shock that a woman would even handle a knife. He wanted someone to go to knife shows with and not be fearful of it all. Oh and would I like to get married?
I laughed and told him he would have to discuss it with my husband. (whose carried a SOG Vision for years).
Not quite to the passing out stage, but I sure do like knives a LOT!

love it.....a success story.

My wife mentioned to me the other day that she's never met a woman who after firing a gun, was still afraid of them.

For the ladies, I think it becomes an equalizer. The average woman is shorter/smaller/etc. than the average man. But a gun held confidently in the hand sure evens things out, doesn't it? :D Same thing could be said for a good knife in the purse.
