Greeting Everyone,
I'm presently a government contractor in Kirkuk, Iraq. I recently came upon some armor that was on a HMMWV. It is 3/16" however I can fine no information as to its composition. Research on the web indicates it may be HY-80 or HY-100. I'd like to make some knives for the members of my team but I need to know (1)what kind of steel it is and if the it is able to be hardened and if so the best method W,O or A? (2)Will it take and keep an edge? and any other info that could be provided would be appreciated. I'd like to make "using" knives but the guys will appreciate wall hangers if the steel is not appropriate for that purpose. Thanks in advance for any info.

Of course the HY-80 means High Yield ,80,000 yield strength. Originally developed for things like ship hulls . It's fairly strong and tough but not a knife steel. Make some wall hangers !!

Thank you for the information and advice. Sorry for the long response time but things get busy here sometimes.

You could find a Damascus maker that could forge it with some good blade steel, maybe "San Mai" style or something. That way you'd still have a blade made from the armor, etc. but it should funciton well as a cutting tool too.
