Pickup a couple of WW2 knives the last month. Army Spec 17-170, 1937, Knife, Pocket, Engineer, Four Blade With Clevis.

Camillus with brass liners and pins and a Pal with steel liners and brass pins and thermoplastic scales.

Mighty fine scales on those two. Once again we see they just don’t jig them like they used to.

Thanks for giving the specification number. This, to my eye, is the quintessential scout pattern and I didn’t know the spec number.

What's a clevis?
I knew right away what "clevis" was supposed to be, but back on the farm over 50 years ago, I think we always referred to that method of connecting machinery to a tractor as a "clovis" hitch. No wonder I was confused when reading about Clovis point spears discovered by archaeologists! :rolleyes: (I Googled "clevis hitch" just to see if it looked familiar, and discovered that info on the Internet is not always accurate!! :eek::eek::p:p All kinds of contradictory info about what is and what is not a clevis hitch. Also,"clevis" and "cleaver" have the same etymological roots - IMHO that's fascinating. ;))
