ARNIS DE MANO: The Essence of the Art (Part 1)

Date: Sunday, July 16th, 2000
Time: 10 AM until 5 PM

There are many styles of Arnis de Mano (the art of Philippine stickfighting) being taught nowadays. Many of them are quite effective and practical. The workshop taught by Rene J. Navarro will cover the essence of the art as he studied it over a long period with many masters. What is unique about the material is that it is informed by the teacher's exposure to many styles, not only of Arnis but also Chinese martial arts weaponry. Instructor Navarro is actually coming out of his retirement from teaching Arnis to share his knowledge of different aspects of this popular discipline.
Included in the workshop: Abecederos (alphabet of the art) for single, double sticks and stick and knife; footwork; body weaving; distancing; feints, and other techniques that are the essentials of mastery.
Bring your own equipment -- two 31 to 33 inch sticks (rattan) and a 1 foot long stick/wooden knife (training daga). Students will be required to sign a waiver of liability. Limited enrollment.
Tuition: Pre Paid by July 10rd: $65 / At the door $ 75

DAO-IN and QIGONG WORKSHOP

Date: Sunday, July 30th:, 2000
Time: 10 AM until 5 PM

This set of Dao-In exercises is drawn from the teachings of Ba Shien Qi (8 Immortal Breaths) by Ta-Jen, a enlightened master in the mountains of Northern China, through David Shen.
There are different sets of movements choreographed to obtain maximum stretching of the tendons, meridians and muscles without discomfort. The regimen is graceful, meditative and healing and reveals an ancient provenance. The Qigong exercises are drawn from the essence of the art. Included are: Opening to Heaven, Embracing the Earth; Riding the Horse in 3 directions; and Embracing the Tree. Basic postures and refinements are going to be covered as well.
Tuition: Pre-Paid by July 23rd: $40 / At the door $ 60

Dr Jopet Laraya is planning on coming to New York City this late summer or early fall and I would like to generate some interest in sponsoring a seminar for him. Dr. Laraya's article, "ESPADA Y DAGA, Get the Edge, Get the Point!" was featured in Martial Arts Legends Presents, Weapons of the Martial Arts (November 1999).

"The espada y daga of lapunti arnis de abaci, as in other styles of Philippine arnis, are unique because they fall under the category of double weapons(long or medium range and short range) the practitioner has the option of emphasizing the stick technique, the dagger technique, or both."

Master Navarro and Dr. Laraya are the only certified Lapunti instructors outside Cebu, Philippines.

Dr Jopet Laraya has just published "La Punti, Arnis de Abancio" out of Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

For further information regarding other publications, arrangements for seminars and/or wet clinics or applications for affiliation with the La Punti Arnis de Abanico International, please contact:
