I once saw a martial arts magazine where an "Arnis Tapado" expert, Ruben Tasingco, demonstrated some interesting stickfighting techniques. One of these involved holding the stick in a reverse grip (against an opponent with a standard grip), closing in with strikes and a stick-throw! I did a web search for "Arnis Tapado", and they don't seem to have a website. How common are reverse-grip stick techniques in the FMA? How does Arnis Tapado compare to other FMA styles?

The only Tapado I have seen was footage of two different guys going up against Eric Knaus on the "Stick vs. Other Weapons" tape of the Dog Brother series. They didn't fare too well. I wasn't impressed with their method at all. They were using a stick that reached from mid-sternum to the ground, and basically swinging it like a baseball bat. I train western methods with a 4 foot stick. What they were doing is very crude in comparison.

hello,

in some old posts to Eskrima Digest, one of the Tapado fighters posted saying that he wanted to keep the other angles of attack secret and only showed 2 which made him very predictable and for Top Dog to close.

The guesses were that that style of Tapado through Romeo Mamar probably had 4 or 5 angles despite the fighter's claims of 3.

from the FMA FAQ:

Tapado
Romeo Mamar

A long cane (50") style with 3 angles of attack and in which the cane
is wielded with either one or both hands. It stresses footwork and
delivery of very powerful blows.

major players : Al Conception, Ron Harris, Bebing Lubrido, Mike Vasquez

It was a "secret", huh? If I was getting my ass kicked as bad as they were all secrets would have been forgotten! :-) What purpose did it serve to come off looking bad in public? Seems to me they would have had a reputation to uphold, or at least a good name to support. As it was their method came off looking pretty lousy.

back to orig. q - my guess: the reverse grip is probably most often off of a successful disarm. and you flow by hitting while one is in reverse and one is regular.
