I'm looking for a small custom fixed blade and a couple of the Arno Bernard offerings have caught my eye, but I have a couple questions and I hoped someone here would be able to provide some answers.

Are these true handmade, mid-tech, or mass produced?

How is the quality? They certainly look nice, but looks isn't everything.

Arno Bernard is a respected maker from South Africa, as is his son....

The knives are handmade, and very well done. Prices are reasonable.

You would do well in purchasing one. (But be warned, it may be difficult to stop at one.... ;))

Thank you. The Squirrel looks like a pretty decent EDC. Just $110 too.

The N690 steel looks roughly equivalent to VG-10 performance-wise.

I have looked at his knives for a couple years now. Looked at them at the Blade Show. Looked at online retailers. They are actual customs. The reason I have not bought one is that I don't know the steel he uses.

I googled the N690 steel Bernard uses and it appears to be roughly equivalent to VG-10. While VG-10 is not a supersteel it still makes darn good knives. I've certainly been very happy with my VG-10 Spyderco.
