Few things compare to losing a trusted companion...and my Spydie Mouse was just that. I have just poseted a "Mouse wanted" thread in the Knife Exchange forum...so if anyone has one they'd liek to part with, please let me know.

Thanks.

Look on the bright side. Now you can move up to a SS Dragonfly, which in my non-esteemed opinion is a better knife, for half the price. Or, buy two Dragonflys for the price of one Mouse - one to lose, and one to keep.

How come you think so, can I ask? I have a Mouse, got it about a week ago, and it's strongly in the "I will never, ever, ever get rid of this knife" group. I've only handled an SS dragonfly.

(edited to replace "never handled" with "only handled." Important typo. Sorry about that.)

I had a SS dragonfly, but I got rid of it in favor of the Mouse. Having used both, I much prefer the Mouse's VG-10 blade to the 'Fly's ATS-55 blade. The Mouse also felt much more solid in my hand. I guess I'd rather spend the extra $$$ to get what I really want...to each his own. :)

Glad to hear you're enjoying the Mouse. Likewise with me on the Calypso Jr. Actually, I've been using both of these knives quite a bit lately...what wonderful designs they both are.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.

I just lost my frn dragonfly like 2 days ago and am looking for a replacment for it. It seems that the mouse might be in running for my next little knife.

Why is the Dragonfly better than the Mouse? First of all, I've never handled a Mouse, have just seen pictures, that's all I have to go by, I'm making some edumacated guesses.
So, within that context: (1) Blade grind: Dragonfly is full flat grind vs. Mouse's sabre/hollow grind. In this type of knife, full flat grind is better than sabre/hollow grind. Dragonfly wins.
(2) Blade pattern: Both have a nice edge shape to them, but Dragonfly's spine is a smooth, gentle curve from tip to handle, while Mouse's spine follows a somewhat not-so-gentle curve from tip to handle (look at pictures). Mouse's spine suddenly bulges out at the thumbhole with a rather ungainly hump, a feature found on some other Spyderco's as well. Dragonfly blade pattern allows for better straight-on penetration than does Mouse. Dragonfly wins.
Those are the two main points. Other points are rather minor to me.
VG-10 vs. Ats-55: does it really matter that much? Or at all? (No).
Handle shape: Both seem pretty good to me. I really like the way Dragonfly fits in my hand. I bet that Mouse has good ergonomics as well.
Solid: How is Mouse more solid? Dragonfly is SS, Mouse is aluminum - so how is Mouse more solid than Dragonfly? How can Mouse be more solid than Dragonfly? It doesn't make sense to me that Mouse is appreciably more solid than Mouse. Wishfull thinking?
Price: Dragonfly is around half the price of Mouse. But price aside I prefer Dragonfly over Mouse, although I'm sure the Mouse is a very nice knife as well. Just not quite as good as the Dragonfly.
But like I said, I've never handled a Mouse, I've just seen pictures, so I could be wrong, though not likely ;)

Okay... thanks for the analysis. Different knives for different people, I guess.

I would strongly disagree with the statement "in this type of knife, full flat grind is better than sabre/hollow grind."

Also, I very much like the blade shape of the Mouse, far more than I do the dragonfly, and I'm not stabbing much of anything with a blade this small, so better penetration doesn't matter to me.

VG-10 over ATS-55 definitely matters to me -- if the steels were switched, I'd buy the Dragonfly instead, even though I like the shape/construction of the Mouse so much more.

And while I don't think the Mouse /is/ more solid, it certainly feels that way to me. Perhaps it is a matter of the scale thickness or simply the ergonomics. I don't have a Dragonfly in front of me to compare. As you've never held a Mouse, obviously you're not going to think they feel more/less solid.

Of course you're not wrong, you're telling us your opinion, and your reasons for your opinion. You really can't be wrong in this situation, unless you try to pass off your opinion as fact (which it almost sounds like you're doing when you say stuff like "in this type of knife, flat grind is better than hollow grind," but I'm assuming that it's just a phrasing thing, because if flat grind was better in this type of knife for everyone, in every situation, obviously all of Spyderco (and everyone else's) small knives would be flat ground only).

And that's cool, good to know, always nice to know different perspectives. You'd rather have a Dragonfly than a Mouse, even if they were the same price; I'd rather have a Mouse than a Dragonfly, even if I could get five or six Dragonflys (dragonflies?) for the price of one Mouse, because I like the steel quality, the grind, the handle material, and the overall shape that much more. All a matter of what you like.

O.K. marty123.
1.The Mouse handle is thicker and wider than the Dragonfly SS.
2. The Mouse has more belly in the blade than the Dragonfly for better slicing.
3. The Mouse has a larger opening hole which makes it easier for some of us.
4.The Mouse clip is reversible.
5. VG-10 steel is terrific.
Like you said, handle them both and see. :D I really like my Dragonfly SS, but love my Mouse. :D

'fraid not. I've been hoping that my wife, now that she has an Ocelot prototype that she carries everywhere, would let me steal her Mouse. Unfortunately, she insists on carrying it in her left pocket or her purse so I can't get to it. Looks like I'm going to need one of my own...

Well, I'm going to see if I can find a Mouse in a store around here so as to actually handle one. Hmmm.

Warrior,

DiscountKnives.com has the Mouse for $80. That's where I bought mine (and my Lil Temperance and several other knives). They ship USPS Priority Mail. If you ordered today, assuming it's in stock, you should have it by the end of the week.

Hope this helps. :)

Johnny
