Does anyone collect arrow heads? I know that this is a little off topic. I found a rather large one about 10 years ago. Last night while digging through some boxes I found it. It is 3-7/8" in length, and looks to be more like a spear head. I found it along a creek bank close to the Kansas/Nebraska border. Thanks for any info.

Brian,

Arrows were not part of the Australian Aboriginals' toolkit but I have picked up a few spearheads over the years, a couple axe heads and a stone knife.

I am planning to scan these and cataloge my collection, drop me an email.

I also collect projectile points. Most of the points you will find date back as far as the Paleo period. True arrowheads are very small (bird points) and are very recent in design (a few hudred years back if I am correct, I haven't studied recently). The older points were used as medium size spear points that were "thrown" with a cupped device called an atlatl. Most of my points are from central Texas. I might have to test out my new digital camera when it gets here (thanks the4th) and post some pics.

Dogman has it right on.Most people mistakenly call the larger points
(over 1") either arrowheads or War arrowheads. And as Dogman says they are spearpoints. Also some of the very large points called spearpoints or ceremonial points were in all actuality knives.
I have some pix in a book of some of the northern CA tribes holding some huge obsidian blades. These things blades about 4" wide and 10" long!

Berkley and all,

I will try to post a pic of the blade that most resembles the one that I have and a link describing it.

It is 3-7/8" in length. If anyone has more info, it would be helpful.
Here is a link to the page if the image dosen't come up http://members.aol.com/artgumbus/agatebasin.html
I would like to know a ballpark value to the point in the link. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
Sorry I can't help you on value. All the points in my collection were gathered in the field or traded for by my dad back in the fifties, before we knew there was anything wrong with digging up Native American sites, and when the things had so little commercial value that no one bothered to fake them. Hopefully someone involved in active collecting now will see this and respond.

I hope, because it just might be for sale.
Thanks for the info.

Brian

I do have a picture of the Point now. If anyone is interested, feel free to contact me and I will e-mail it to you. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Brian
