As I learn to manipulate the balisong, I find things to be going fairly smoothly. The bali feels good in my hand, am doing ok with finger twirls, etc. Now, not being superhuman, I'm not suddenly "The Best" or anything, just happy to be going along.

However, one thing is very frustrating. I am having a H*** of a time with aerials. Catching them? Haven't had a chance. Every time I make the initial toss(in a windmill aerial), the bali makes a sideways turn along its trek. I cannot seem to get this under control.

To do this, I have been using my practice bali(a Jaguar with wave handle) so as not to destroy my 42. Is it that the bali may be of balance? Or am I just suckin' up the floor.

This is very frustrating and I cannot wait until I practice my way out of it. Just having a groan session online.

Soon, the trick will be mine!!!!

*edit*I forgot to ask, does anyone have any advice towards this?*/edit*

I dunno why you're having problem keeping the bali on plain.. Maybe your bali needs alignment. But i would pracitce by just flipping the closed bali and catching it. Do this until your sure you have a perfect plane. Also try flipping a hammer. Make sure it has no spin on it. Then try with an open bali... Just get both handles and the blade on the same plane, and all should go well...-

Just work the toss. Forget about the catch. Tape the blade over (not to protect you, but to protect your matress) and work over your bed. This way the knife won't get beat up and you won't have to bend over the pick it up a thousand times. Just work the toss letting the knife fall to the bed over and over again until it's perfect.

Relax, take it easy.

With no thought to the catch, you can concentrate on figuring out what in your toss is causing the problem and correcting that.

Once you've got a nice, straight, repeatable toss, then work on your catch.

I had the same problem when I first started. Try spinning it a little faster, it seems to help. Beyond that all I can say is practice practice practice

Bleeding, it's a hobby of mine.

Hmm..either one or both handles are too lose,or your hand isn't letting go of the knife properly.
Another way you can practice the toss-ups is to sit on the floor with a pillow on your lap,and more pillows surrounding you. This way, you're closer to the floor & padding than standing over a bed.
Try tossing the knife up while it's locked closed.See if there's any wobble during the toss.If so,your hand is the main problem. You may have to teach your hand how to perform the move in a slightly different way.
Several of the problems could stem from:
A)holding the knife too tight just as you start the toss.
B) holding the knife in a slightly awkward way just before the toss.
C) the knife is at an almost 90 degree angle with the hand (45 degrees works best for all of the tosses that I know).
D) just as the knife is about to leave the hand, the fingers make it roll slightly. This is a usual cause from my experience..and can be corrected with the right grip.

If there's no discernable wobble with it closed, but only when open...chances are at least one handle is too loose or a pin got bent and has sent the handle out of alignment.

I agree, the aerials are tricky... so tricky that I've decided to wait with them and practise them later !

What you say! All your balis are belong to us! Take off every zig !

Try puting your thumb on top of the handle right before you release it. Thats so weird, arials were the the first thing I learned after the windmill opening, and are really easy for me, but I cant do a finger twirls to save my life!

I have a question too, could the fact that I have really small hands be the reason for my inability to do them?

Small hands shouldn't be a real problem.I used to know a little girl who was 6 who could do toss-ups with several sizes of balisongs. Her dad was one of the regulars at the knife store where we got the knives.
As I mentioned before, chances are you just need to change your grip. For some people, putting the thumb on the back of the handle works, for others (using skeletonized handles)putting the side of the thumb over a certain hole works. It's all a matter of what you can find that will work for you.

I know how you feel. One of the reasons that I got my practice is one time when I was practicing a foreward grip ariel pass from right to left I cought my bali by the blade

, and really gashed my finger. Thankfully I keep my knifes sharp so the cut was clean, and not as painfull as it could have been.
